Hey,
I have heard rumors that the necessary courses for Corporals has changed (at least in the Res world). Apparently you no longer need a QL4 to become a Cpl as there is a new course called PWSQ (or something like that) that you must take instead.

I was looking on the bulletin board outside of our Platoon office last nite and there was a sheet with all the new course structuring on it. Anyways details on this PWSQ(?) include PO‘s, EDO‘s(?);
- 60MM Mortar
- C6 (SF Kit?)
- 9mm
- Small Arms Coach
- Eryx Missile System

Now they listed this course as something like 22 days long. Is there any accuracy to this? Seems as though it might be a little short?
Also on the list it stated BMQ was ~40 days, SQ was ~40 days, and Infantry BIQ was ~20 Days.

Now it was my understanding (and experience) that Bmq/Sq/Biq were each 20 Trg days?

Thanks

I think this was covered a few times.
A private now needs this course (reserve world anyways) to become a corporal.
I have a feeling this summer comming up will be the first and last time it‘s run.

The idea that your covering 3 pretty important weapons systems in 22 days means your only touching ont he basics of the weapon.

I also heard that basic comms is to be on this course.

C6 is with SF kit only, I believe, since C6 (light role) is covered in SQ.

60mm mortar in hand role is covered in BIQ, so I‘m guessing 60mm mortar on this course covers with bipod/base plate?

I think this course does makes sense to have, but why isn‘t this a QL4?

BMQ,SQ,BIQ are all 20 training days each. (At least when I took it)

I think it would depend on what trade you are in. ‘Cause for me all I need is QL3 and then I‘m on my QL5 course which gives me my Cpl‘s.

The new trg structure for the Army goes something like this. It starts with Basic Military Qualification (CF wide) then for all Army trades you go onto the Soldier Qualification. Then onto MOC specific trg (read ql3) this is the begining of DP1(developmental period) this will vary among trades. For the Arty it will encompass the MOC specific and all other crse‘s that the person needs before the Detachment Commanders crse. That crse starts DP2 which carries on to include the advanced crse‘s. DP3 and up includes higher level crse‘s.

The course in which you speak is the PSWQ, Platoon Support Weapons Qualification.
Included within are modules on:
C6 MG W/SF Kit,
60mm Mortar W/bipod
ERYX SRAAW (M)
Certainly this course isn‘t as in depth as it‘s predecessors but it should be all that is really required. Comms is not part of this course.
In the new army (INF) the progression kinda goes like this:

BMQ (basic nauseating military crap)

SQ (basic army fieldcraft crap/driver wheel/comms)

MOC (more infantry crap except now you‘re all infantry guys/girls)

QL4 (@ BN..Recce,LAV, Anti-Armour, pioneer, etc...)

INSERT MISC QUAL HERE (basic para, mountain ops, winter warfare, etc...)

PSWQ (MG, 60mm, ERYX)

PLQ (your first leadership course in which there will be a little of every type of trade present, half of which will complain at being assessed doing the job of an infanteer and not at something more akin to each and everyone of their specific trades)

Sect 2 I/C Course (Same as above, only all Infantry, tactical, and harder assessed (i.e., when you do your patrol you have to actually find your objective)

INSERT ADVANCED COURSES HERE + things like JM, PI, PPF, etc...

DP3A (nope, no more small arms course, this baby will qual you all the way to Sgt)

I think that‘s all that you really need to know for now, after that it‘s all pretty much the same except for a couple of title changes...

Nfld.Sapper,
The only reason we by pass our 4‘s is because in the engineering world we do a lot of O.J.T.‘s ,
which can‘t be taught in a class room and we learn it on the job!

Doug I noticed you mentioned Pioneer,
I thought this trade went by the way side.
Correct me if im wrong.

The Pioneer platoon may be on the out but I believe that we still qualify pioneers.

I did my QL2/3 and did a QL 4 MG course, and I am slated to take a "DP2a" course this summer at Meaford. Does this mean that I can‘t be a Corporal under the new system? Or can I still get promoted because I qualified under the old one?

Doug, The SQ for the MO is a bit different: unfortunately we don‘t get the Driver Wheeled or Comms course (not enought time/resources) and they‘re still being offered as seperate courses.

Cbt Medic, The Reg SQ does not "Qualify" a person with a comms crse but rather teaches them the basics of the dismounted section level radio. However there is talk now at increasing the comms portion to 10 days vice 5 and in the end the troops on the Reg SQ will be Qualified part one of the TCCCS crse. There is still a full TCCCS (Comms) crse.
