New Ruck only to Infantry?

I've heard a rumor that there's a CANFORGEN floating about that states the new CTS ruck system is only to be fielded to infantry units.

Can anybody set the record straight here?

You've been lied to, but only by half.  That rumour is old and we had an official notification of that error posted in the regt.  The priorety is to the infantry, then to those arms that support them dismounted (medics, sigs, engrs, etc).

Infantry and attached units...

Eventually all Cbt Arms are supposed to get it (REGT FORCE)

CTS told us at their little show that there where no plans (read funding) for a reserve issue...

I'm taking part in some CTS stuff tomorrow with some gloves so I will ask myself if I get the chance.

And they wonder why we go and buy our own kit - Kifaru here I come....

Madness! If they are replacing the rucksack you'd think they'd replace all the rucksacks... what are we supposed to do? Lash a kit bag to our small packs? or do they have enough 84 pattern rucks in the system to last forever?

That would be great... btw, are the gloves one of the existing CTS items or is it a new one (something like a Hatch-Operator glove? or am I dreaming?)

Indeed, I've never heard of Kifaru before but thanks for the info, the EMR looks like a good piece of kit...

Your new ruck will be a small pack, augmented with a duffel bag or two.  Not so bad, but before you yell about augmentees and "everyone should be issued the same stuff, one army after all"  I believe these will be issued more in a you need it, fine, you will get it.  The small pack holds as much as the 84, and you can put the valise on the top or bottom.  Besides, who really needs the rucksack?  Light infantry that must carry and live out of the thing, or the mounted dudes that just toss it into the back of their vehicle and can easily live out of their tac vest.

If they're only planning on issuing the new ruck to the reg. force infantry for the forseeable future, the reserve infantry units are really gonna be hurting if there's no access to '82 pattern rucks at a minimum.

Lashing the valise to the small pack is ok for someone that's living out of a vehicle, but if you're a light infantry type, you're f*cked if that's how you're supposed to hump your stuff, especially for winter ops.

As I've said earlier, for anyone that's in the market for a ruck, if you are in a unit/position that's not going to spaz out over using your own ruck, you won't go wrong with spending some $ on a Kifaru.  I had a look at the new Marine Corps ruck that was designed by Arc'Teryx and my Kifaru EMR is hands down better than that.  I'd venture to say that a Kifaru would probably outperform (in terms of comfort, functionality and durability) than the new CTS main ruck when it is fielded.

My thoughts exactly...

So you'd say it's worth the price? How does it compare with modern backpacking rucks? (thinking of killing two birds with one stone..)

Difficult access to the 82 pattern ruck?  Thats going to be nice when you have to get a new one every year because it sucks ass.

Ki-fa-ru! Ki-fa-ru! (Just thought I'd get the Kifaru thread started!  ^-^

Check out the Lightfighter.com forum - guys in the Sandbox (SOF and not) swear by the things.

When Kevin and Matt gave it the thumbs up, I was converted.... ;D

Thanks, I checked it out, the reviews speak for themselves... I want one, now I just have to convince myself I need one... ahhh the life of a kit monkey...

Tell me about it.... :blotto:

Let's just say that I've traded in my 95-Liter Lowe Alpine knowing full well that a nice Olive Drab Kifaru can meet my civvie needs.

I know that they are two separate items, but with no planned renewal of the 82 pattern, and the knowledge that the new ruck when fielded is going to the Light Infantry first, the infantry in general, their dismounted support, and that might be about it, as far as I know, the current plan is for everyone else to use the small pack as their "tactical load carriage", and their duffel bag, located in their vehicles, echelon, or rear area as their "strategic load carriage".  I have dealt with the new rucks, and they are beyond belief, when all adjusted and fitted to the user, but they are gong to be an incredibly expensive item.
