What do you mean by old style tac vest? There has only been 1 style of TAC Vest which is the current issued CADPAT one. It's predecessors was the 82 Pattern Webbing, and it's closest sibling would probably be the Load Bearing Vest (LBV or Jean Jacket).
To which of those are you referring to? I am assuming it is the latter LBV. If you plan to stock it up with cool kit to use on your survival exercises, well you're gonna be very disappointed. Because the main pockets on your LBV will be used for ammo storage, since you're a cadet, you're not gonna have any of those. The other pouches are usually used to carry, canteen, socks, gloves, maps, compass, melmac plate , and a variety of other nifty things.
Also, there's stuff like grenades, bayonet, bug repelant, the list goes on and on
i'm referring to the lbv (just read the tag). i collect gear also and this was one of the things on this list. the only things on it i'm unclear about are the little black squares now.
those allow you to fasten additional small pouches or add ons, by using a snap on type of idea. Thread the piece of nylon/what ever through that and snap it together once its threaded through.
In Kabul (2005) they issued us desert CADPAT LBVs and told us we wern't allowed to use our green TacVests anymore. Let me tell you about how pissed I was with this vest that was 3 sizes too large for me and with pouches that wouldn't close over my C9 boxes. It was a case study in "One step forward, two steps back". I was actually happy to start using my TV again!!!
I remember when they first came out. Camp security in Primosten (CANLOGBAT) had them. As crap as they were they were a step up from zap-strapping a bayonet to your flack jacket. They were important though because the were also plate carriers, of which we had none prior to that.
