In any case, I noticed the lack of body armour on the recent pics, has the threat level gone down?

Ooops - sorry it took so long to reply - I was watching MTV ...

Anyway - when you say "lock of body armour on the recent pics", are you perhaps referring to the ones taken inside the relative safety of Camp Julien (i.e. inside the perimetre) ... as opposed to out on patrol ... ?

I may be a vapid blond airhead, but even I know that one does not need to don armour while behind the Hesco and wire.

The fact that troops were told to wear green instead of arid colour uniforms to distinguish themselves from US and other ISAF troops was in official DND press releases.

I though it was a cowardly policy at the time, but no one seemed to make a big fuss about it.

Sorry pbi. That's what we were told, in orders. And we ALL had arid in our barrack boxes on Roto 0. Turned it all in, in the plastic bags, before we left Julien. Got to keep the scarf.

I stand by what I said. It's wrong, and I don't really care who issued the order, nor am I particularly concerned who reads this post. You don't have to love the US, or toady to them, or kiss their asses: that's equally wrong. But to come out and say a thing like that about an ally, whose soldiers are serving in the same theatre as ours, is inexcusable. It is the kind of thing that causes Canadians to be regarded as irritating little sanctimonious chatterboxes, and I am ashamed of it. And anyway, it's completely false "protection": how stupid do we really think the enemy is? Cheers.

Hey Britney, do force protection measures and current alert states sound like things we should be discussing in this open source forum?

Exactly...amen excoelis.

Great, then I'm glad I haven't contributed anything other than point out what was quite readily apparent to any untrained observer.

Brilliant.  Apparently the nuances of Information Operations are lost on you.
One word:  "Disinformation"

(but, now, it's time for me to get back to MTV and watching those sweaty nubile chicks ...)

Cool pics, I notice you're carrying an Aimpoint and some other goodies. You don't get any grief for it? I' trying to decide what to buy, Aimpoint or EOTech.  My buddy works for Blackwater and they swear buy Aimpoint. Headshot at 350m with it. Hate to ask a dumb question, what is A&D? What is their website.  We don't have the TV's out on the west coats yet, but I've tried them and realized very quickly that they won't work for light infantry.

Apparently they are, and in lieu of any further exposition beyond that one word, here is my conclusion. If this confusion is the purpose of the "information operation". then you gentlemen are very crafty indeed.

Possibility #1) Threat levels have indeed gone down, and leaders are now confident enough to send out patrols unencumbered by body armour.

#2) I am the victim of a nefarious CF "disinformation" campaign designed to mislead me, and the canadian public,  into thinking that threat levels have gone down, when in fact they have not. Members in photos released on the internet (and presumably approved by the chain of command) go to length to show that they are without armour, but immedietly don armour after the photos are taken.

#3) They're all JTF!! and JTF doesn't need no stinkin armour! or helmets!!!

I think I'll go with #3.

Hey Britney, do force protection measures and current alert states sound like things we should be discussing in this open source forum?

With all due respect, why not? I'm sure analysts all over Canada and the world are doing so as we speak. I was just "discussing" and speculating on this very issue with my next door neighbour, it didn't go too far as neither myself nor my neighbour knew a thing about what force protection measures and alert states are like in theatre, but I hope no one called CSIS on us! Now, discussion that includes DISCLOSURE of sensitive information on a public message board would be another matter entirely, but I don't think I have to worry about that too much, seeing as how I don't actually posses any.

Yeah MJP and I are all JTF  8)  - I wish cool hair and all the medic chicks you can eat...  ;)

Mike - I see they let you "out"  ;)

Aimpoint is a CCO - like the EOTECH's - it is six of one half dozen of another as to which is th ebest <150M weapon sight.

350m headshots  ::) - consistantly under field conditions from a carbine - not likely - it has nto magnification.

Britney - you are a really strange one you know...

Hey Kev good to see you up and posting.....Yea they decided to let us out to leave on a positive note.  Some positive note, I was hoping for a trip to Bagram.  ;)

Wow I learn something new everyday, today I found out I'm on the Dwyer Hill ski team....

MJP,

Well GF had me tied to a bed for the first week back...

I don't know if you Steve from Prairie GunWorks? but he told me the funniest story about someone they called Barney Rubble on a Croatia tour (we was RRR then)...

I emailed Jay - I guess you guys are back on the 6th (ish).

I left on a positive note too  ;)

[I vented all my hate to a board member...]

Cheers
Kevin

The headshot was a SWAT sniper, with 16" heavy barrel, static on a rooftop. Far more fantastic shots have been made! RE:Our own guys in Afghanistan. Some of the PSD (protective services details) guys carry two uppers with them. 14.5" stepped uppers for escorts, and 16" heavy uppers for static jobs. And they both get used.

I'm curious about this A&D company, is the gear good? Worth buying?

I haven't heard of any callouts for reserve guys aside from CIMIC and the defence platoon either.  Although the rumour is that Canada extended their commitment and the idea of sending a CRIC is under serious consideration although it would be about a year and a half before it goes.

How's the day-to-day ops? I did some time in Croatia (Medak) and wonder how it's going there.  You never hear anything on the news unless someone drives over a mine or something.

Well.......it was 10 years afo or was 11? I don't know I'm starting to get on in years! I'm not as agile as I once was.

Westie - you are missing my point the Aimpoint is a CCO (close combat optic) it is ZERO magnification - thus the same as trying a headshot with irons at 350m.  I have buddies running two uppers in Iraq  - the 10.5" ECQBR's and 16" Recce Carbines, using an AImpoint on the CQB gun and an ACOG on the GP gun.

My A&D vest started to have troubles starting month three in threatre - nothing major but it needed a rigger.

Britney Spears - I dont know about Dinosaur 35yr odl Cpl - I have gone as far as I am going to go for I keep doing what I want, which includes calling issues *(like your posts) as I see them...
