The village of Skokie has agreed to pay $875,000 to a Chicago woman who accused a police officer in a lawsuit of using excessive force during her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Apparently he's also filling two other municipal jobs at the same time, so even if he's fired as chief, he'll still have two more paychecks.

Could see that...but, outside looking in based on what I'd seen, he might have a hard time explaining to a jury why he had to put a minor in a choke hold at a reasonably peaceful protest...and if he'd grabbed that person and they'd fought back, especially if no audible warning of who they were, again, might have a hard time convincing a jury they weren't defending themselves if they turned the tables. Incidentally, I generally give cops the benefit of the doubt for most things...though have treated people in custody that likely got much more than they actually deserved based on the stories of the patient, the cops and witnesses...plus certain injury patterns are pretty self-explanatory.

Mail is an anonymous way to move contraband. When a suspect parcel is delivered, the receiver can simply say "I never ordered that" or "no idea who the sender is or what's inside". In some cases, controlled deliveries were done to ensure the right evidence was gathered at the right time from the right person and it was admissible in court. But that's a lot more work than running the dog through the mail room.Legal authority is highly overrated. Let's just search whatever mail we want - Nunavut RCMP.

Proposed federal legislation could allow police searches to resume
There are rules not only for domestic mail, as outlined in the article, but also international mail. With international mail, it's governed by the Customs Act. Even so, when I worked at the international mail centre, we couldn't just search anything we wanted to. We needed indicators of smuggling, some of which were intelligence based and other times experience based. The other issue we faced was sheer volume. Too many packages and too few BSOs.

A Seattle police officer was fired after an investigation found he violated department policies related to honesty, professionalism, and adherence to the law stemming from his conduct during personal bankruptcy proceedings and a failed real estate venture, according to a newly released disciplinary summary.
The termination followed an investigation by the Seattle Office of Police Accountability into allegations that the officer and his wife defrauded investors connected to a home renovation project before he joined the force and later made false statements in bankruptcy filings.
OPA Director Bonnie Glenn sustained three allegations against the officer, concluding he violated department standards requiring employees to obey the law, act professionally, and provide truthful and complete information. The discipline imposed was termination, according to the agency’s closed case summary issued Sept. 18, 2025.

Kind of funny really. You can tell by their response they see stuff like following the law as beneath them. The chief is like yeah whateves.
One of those things that’s happened up north for a long time- a lot of the villages are dry and demand it be enforced, including searching incoming stuff with search warrants notwithstanding that it’s mail in post. Not saying it’s right, just that I guess in a bunch of places it’s been an accepted and even expected practice given the horrific problems they have with substance abuse.Legal authority is highly overrated. Proposed federal legislation could allow police searches to resume
It does highlight a problem: even with a court issued search warrant some mail is immune from police search while it’s in transit. In this day and age there are obvious problems there. There are limited postal inspectors, which is further compounded when stuff is going on in rural or remote areas.
A legislative fix to this is needed and has been proposed but is hung up because Bill C-2 was overly broad. A judge or justice should have the power to grant a search warrant that allows the searching of mail with the same legal threshold we’d use to search a home or a computer.

I can't imagine what police up north have to deal with on a daily basis.
Northern communities would imode without a steady influx of RCMP and other outside resources like doctors, food and fuel.

The community councils are very vocal that they get to decide what comes into their communities and often the police are more than happy to oblige. Seizing liquor and drugs at the airports and the post office. These also aren’t communities with a post office- they are contracted into the northern stores and the employees call in drugs. And then the community leadership want to know what we are doing when they watch drugs pass through the post office. There are also warrants obtained but those warrants also are tossed in court because the courts do not understand the reality of 350 people in the Arctic.
Even where there are community bylaws there isn’t an authority but it’s always been a convo.
The chief Superintendent is TRYING to get them to get rid of a historical practice that is older than the charter in the territory. And you guys think it’s wrong that he is admitting it.
I wonder what your response would be if he denied the problem existed.
I’ve personally seen this conversation come around three times before. Often brought up by police and not Canada post.
The law assumes a structure that doesn’t exist and the police are left to manage community expectations without the support of the courts. Making a call of losing their trust with the community or taking Roger’s cocaine.

Decades ago there was a drug investigator in Iqaluit who had basically made CIs of people who shouldn’t be CIs and rode rip shod over the charter, the law, and even the most basic of standards.
He was eventually resigned from the force. He was an example of an actual literal abuse and not caring about the laws surrounding this.
He also would bring in the drug dog as the mail and passengers all use the same pipeline into the territory and would have them walk the line on “tips”.
Walking case law. I couldn’t stand him. But he had all the seizures and in the time before a lot of this focus results led more than how.
It would be nice if this could lead to them to correcting this as a territory. At least being on the same line across the board in the territory in concert with Justice and the Territorial Gov
Another province I was on Hadrians wall in we were out of step with the federal laws but the province, justice, local leadership were all onboard so we were consistent with the intent of all the levels. That was more comfortable as everyone was being transparent and still operating in the rules. Just provincially. As we couldn’t influence the law in the area where we needed to federally.

Guessing when things get out of hand in a community with a lot of drugs or ODs the RCMP get slammed for not stopping it.
