Chlorine gas is uh… Pretty different from CS. This would be a major no no under the Chemical Weapons Convent

For the sake of curious debate, would that be applicable? Soldiers can't use CS gas on enemy combatants because it's considered a chemical weapon, but soldiers could use it against civilians rioting at a front gate because it's being used as a crowd control agent (if I'm not mistaken?)

Similarly police can use hollow points in Canada but soldiers couldn't while deployed.

Military Police deployed as police officers could carry hollow point ammo but Military Police deployed as field platoon MP's are issued ball ammunition because they facing off against enemy soldiers in the field.

As far-fetched as the suggestion is, wouldn't something like chlorine gas being used as a crowd control agent be similar to using CS gas on protestors or smoke & fire to get someone out of a house?

There is a lethal force order in the background here- not being involved and not having any special knowledge, I can say that any lethal force order is rescinded and re-evaluated against the circumstances constantly. The fact that it was in play still means that there was real threat in the moment this was used. That’s all I can read between the lines from the news story.

The order isn’t issued and then it just hangs over the event.

No.

CS dissipates and normally does not do long term respiratory damage.

Chlorine gas, in high concentrations, will destroy your lungs.

Setting the house on fire gave him some added incentive to get the hell out, plus it put the RCMP in a more advantageous position to deal with someone armed and willing to shoot at police. Two thumbs up.


Not to sound mental (can I say that?) but chlorine gas would work too. Having been accidentally poisoned and almost killed by chlorine gas myself (funny story) that shit is crazy. Shrinks your lungs up and basically turns your mucus membranes acidic. I spent a week laying down feeling like I was breathing through a straw because my lungs couldn't properly inflate. It would definitely make someone not think about shooting police.

While I think fire and lead in high concentrations also destroy ones lungs you have a point. Poisoning people isn't going to past the Globe test.
