Police Folk Allegedly Behaving Badly

this is fascinatingly fast to anyone who knows about these processes. The article says it was from allegations in Mid June

He's offended, about all the piss taking I guess...

Toronto police chief offended at suggestion they lost Bridle Path home invasion suspect

'We are very very clear. We are following the evidence as it becomes available,' said Chief Myron Demkiw on Monday

The Toronto Police Service kickoff to crime prevention week on Monday quickly took a turn into questions about an already committed crime — the home invasion last week in the city’s Bridle Path that wounded local CEO David Morton and his family, and resulted in police searching for a suspect, Daijohn Richards, who was himself briefly admitted to hospital.

Asked by a reporter to “clarify for the public how (Richards) was let go and is now missing,” Police Chief Myron Demkiw responded: “I actually take umbrage with the way you frame that question. That’s not what has been said by the police at all. We are very very clear. We are following the evidence as it becomes available. Had there been evidence to allow us to do something different, that’s what would have happened. We are following the evidence as expeditiously as we can, and the investigation continues to unfold.”

He would not give further details, he said, “to preserve the integrity of the investigation, as it is very very dynamic and active as we speak here today.”

This case is horrifying and from what I can tell has barely made a ripple in the news.

lt would have to be sufficiently particular. Someone showing up in a hospital with a wound on the other side of town sometime later almost certainly won't cut it without other compelling evidence. In Mann he matched a suspect description for a recent crime in the immediate vicinity. Even at that, I'm not sure they could justify detention of someone if the only evidence at hand was that that person was a victim (as a person with a gunshot wound usually will be).
The "victim" could also be the victim of careless use (CCC s 86(1)) as is the case with some hunting accidents resulting in self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Sure, but an officer placed in the circumstance of having to determine if grounds exist to arrest will have to work with the objective facts at hand. We can’t ’what if’ our way into an arrest that isn’t otherwise legally there.

Agreed. My internt was to illustrate that not all GSW are the results of a criminal assault. Some are an "own goal". It's hunting season, after all.,

Likely a different provincial regime in Quebec. Or a "damn the torpedoes" approach.
The SPVM and it's predecessors have had a tumultuous relationship with the citizens of Montréal. Anything they can do to repair that relationship is welcome.

Having observed at a distance for roughly thirty odd years with the input of people who either live there or have lived there.
I suspect I will be watching that process with interest. I also suspect that I'll also be wondering how they manage to screw that up.
