I guess I'm pretty stupid for not knowing this but what does PTE stand for?

I did a search but couldn't find anything.

Well, thinking private was Pvt, is an honest mistake, as I do believe that is the American abbreviation.  Too many war movies for you.
And, I think just about everyone who joins is a little taken aback by the pronounciation of Lieutenant, it took a bit to get used to, but then I learned that you really just have to call them Sir or Mame, and it's all fine and dandy  ;D

hehehe...

Recruit Bloggins says to his Sgt: Sgt. where is the 'F' in Lieutenant?

Sgt: Same place as the 'R' in Colonel.

Aren't some people getting a little to touchy. If anyone who has the rank of Cpl even in the cadets doesn't know what PTE stands for than they should not even have that high of rank. IMO that is evidence of a screwed up cadet training system or bordering on a complete waste of skin.

I was an air cadet, as air cadets, we did not have the 'rank' or private, we had LAC or 'leading air cadet'

this still does not excuse the fact that he does not know. Although I was in air cadets, we still had to know the ranks of all 3 corps (yes, including the abbreviations)

Pte is Private.  Unless you are typing in all-caps, you would not use "PTE."

re colonel...

Someone once pointed out that 5 of the 7 letters in Colonel spell Colon. 78%+/-
Now does that make a COL 78% @#$hole?

Hmmm...  You may not want to be the first to bring that up at the next officers' mess...  :D

An honest question  >:D

To which one of my former CO's (A stand-up chap and great officer and gent) replied:Well I'll give you 5 days(extras) to think of the answer.

There's no such thing as a stupid question.

He was brave enough to ask, and that's reason enough to answer him honestly.
Come on guys, you're all grown men and women, (well, if not, at least halfway there...) and you really shouldn't be bashing this kid just because he asked a question.

He probably won't ask any other questions now because he knows he'll get mean replies. Be nice.  :(

Merry Christmas,
Lex

Of course!  Good on him for coming forward....he didn't know the answer....he looked it up but to no avail, and thus came to us, intelligent beings that we are, to ask us in our infinite wisdom, the answer to the question that puzzled him so.
In all seriousness though, glad you asked instead of stumbling around wondering!  Hope you don't disappear and neglect to ask another question!
