Quite a leap forward, especially for reservists.

It is an excellent change, much needed for something that hasn't been updated in 20+ years. Now they just need to align the RegF plan with something as simple and elegant.

Should help retention and recruitment in the Reserves.

Education reimbursements

Also makes a CT from the Reg F more attractive - get up to 30K for educational upgrading in the P Res if you stay for four years, then the VAC ETB is on top of it.

Added bonus is that since the CAF benefits from the educational reimbursement, it's not a taxable benefit (ETB is taxable).

If only I didn't keep getting rejected for it "because there is no money in the budget for it" or "we changed the website you need to submit your application to and you submitted to the old one and it's too late now to re-apply."

I would think that a reservist that gets to be NES would not be able to collect, hence the requirement to show up at actual reserve training sessions.

Requires the unit to do the actual paperwork to declare them NES.
Hell, it wouldn’t be hard to create a “check if NES?” flag in the pay or HR system if someone hasn’t signed in/been paid for duty in a certain period. Generate an automated email to the appropriate manager.

The pay systems are one floor below the Chaplain General and are held together by prayer.

Adding new functions is a lengthy process, since priority one is keeping them from failing, priority two is keeping them legal, and new things are priority three. See also: implementation of the new service pay, currently looking at December 2026, sixteen months after being announced.

You’re right, I predicated that on a presumption of basic competence.

Anyone who’s held an executive role in military pay for the past decade, and wasn’t shuffled on for pointing out the emperor is named, should be fired and stripped of their LinkedIn.

Oddly enough, the GoC is very gun shy about new pay systems right now...

Fun fact: the first release of the Reg F (and some class C) pay system, CCPS, was a few months before Atari released the 2600 video game system. While there have been a few refactorings done since then, that's the level of tech debt being carried.

The new reimbursement rate is crazy in a great way. At least in Manitoba, you now get a free degree as a reservist, tuition plus books for a bachelors degree works out to about 6 - 7k a year.

Even the more expensive programs like medicine will be half off for you. The recruiters need to be singing this from every rooftop at every high school in the province - "serve and we WILL pay for your bachelors degree".

Note that it's reimbursement of 75% to an annual limit of $7,500, career limit of $30,000. So the individual is still on the hook for the other 25% (and anything beyond $7,500).
