Replacing the Subs

One big thing I was looking at with the two designs is the German sub will require half the manning the Korean subs do. That is a serious factor for us considering how difficult it is to get people into the sub service in the first place.

I thought that the crewing sizes were about the exact same, maybe the SK requires like 3 more bodies than the German boat.

Enjoy!

Navy commander says Canada could end up with subs from two different suppliers

Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee says the Royal Canadian Navy could end up with submarines supplied by both companies vying for Ottawa’s lucrative sub procurement contract — and there could be advantages to diversifying the fleet.

I wonder if this comment is teeing us up to running 2 fighter fleets......

Topshee is quite the pot stirrer as an outsider looking in.

If we go with the German CD option, we have a guaranteed delay of at least 12 years.

Probably 10 years for the next one....

That feels in line with this government's direction of travel. It never seems to say no. Now the response is "eventually".

They actually have the same crew requirements. The KSS-III simply has extra bunk space.

Unless its a government to government contract. Norway and Germany could agree to say give Canada boat three of their build, and then six etc... So we end up with a few boats early and a bunch later on.

If its a Canada to TKMS contract yes, we'll likely have to wait for the first boat 2034ish, with IOC 2035.

That also assumes that governments don't change between now and delivery... If Germany says, "we want all our boats now, Canada can wait", since TKMS will be making them in Germany, Canada will wait.

Going with an option that has the production capacity to build our boats faster from the start means we reduce the risk of wait times caused by future political shifts.

Normally when I see someone so negative about one thing, and full of praise for the other, they have a motivation. A perfect example is car salesmen...

Possibly. Most governments keep their foreign relationships relatively stable over time, particularly where billions in military contracts are at stake. If Germany were to do something like that (outside of an emergency) they would lose their international market for submarines.

Even with a contract with a company a government could do that. Break it and "steal" the boat.
