Replacing the Subs

Not so sure Carney is transactional enough to abandon his hardcore climate crisis/hysteria beliefs to support an oil pipeline to the west coast.

Although it would be fun watching Eby lube up and pretzel himself into axcepting one.

The middle ground might be to revive the old railway proposal to ship oil by rail to Prince Rupert. They claimed 600,000 ish bbl/day and the track system has been seriously upgraded since the proposal was made.

Seems like a nice fella (reference the book quote)

I would say that just about any one that puts themself forward into any type of leadership/politician role has some degree of 'sliminess' to them.

It comes down to your belief of how slimy they are, are they your 'type' of slimy and what is your willingness to accept and 'fight/work' under their level of slime.

Life, from birth to death, is accepting a certain level of compromise.

Anybody that has ever tried to sell anything quickly becomes aware of the need for manipulation. You don't have tell the problems with your solution. The client and the competition both will handle that. You have to focus on maintaining credibility and promoting your benefits.

Eventually you run out of credibility. The trick is knowing when to bail out.

But they are bought by politicians...
Any politician that does not familiarize themselves with what the GoC might want to purchase should really be excluded from any decision making.

If all they are worried about is who gets what contract they are not worthy.

ADDING: I am not saying they have to be experts but they should at least go on a sub and talk to the crew - from the Captain to the cook.

When is the last time the leader of one of the opposition parties toured a CAF base and spoke with individuals there about their needs without a camera or reporter being present?
When I transfered from Fidelity Investments in Boston to their CDN offices in Toronto in 2000, the guy running Fidelity Canada was David Dennison. This guy was different, much different than any CEO I had dealt with in the past.
He was known to randomly leave his office by himself and get into the elevator and pick a random floor and start walking around going up to fellow Fidelity employees and sitting down with them and asking them how their day was, what did they find interesting about their job, what was holding them back, challenging them, what was working, what was not. Before long word would get out that David was around and various line managers, Directors and such would come by. That’s when he would wrap up his visit and go back to his office. Whatever someone told David they knew it was in total confidence, he had the employees back and everyone, the average employee loved him because he took the trouble to learn their names, he knew everyone’s name, he knew their troubles.
Shortly after I got there to Toronto he got a massive promotion to Boston where he did the same thing there and it shook the place to the core. He then got another big promotion before he finally came back to Canada and become the first CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, the CPPIB and he ran that place beautifully.

The long winded point in trying to make is, a good leader needs to get out of his or her office and go and spend time with their employees, learn their names, hear from them what is working and what is not. Let them know that you care and that you are a human being just like them.

Is this something LPC MPs are doing right now ?

I wish one would find me for a chat.
I was thinking along the lines of the various party leaders, but yes, 100%.
The deliver mechanism can be challenging because I’m not sure how an MP can get access to you and your peers without a supervised, scripted, monitored meeting occurring.
David had the ability to just walk out of his office quietly, get into the elevator and do this for 15-25 mins before word got out and the gig was up.

Yes, Liberal MPs are doing this ?

I’ve got no idea if any MP’s are doing this.
I’m just saying that I saw first hand this style of management, at the very top, only once in 30yrs and I can say that it worked effectively, very effectively and I don’t know why I’ve not see it more over the years.
In my 20yrs of contracting independently in the banking world in Toronto I’ve tried to do something similar in the roles that I’ve had. I make some time monthly to have conversations with the people I work with throughout a projects life cycle to know them personally, to learn about their day to day job, what’s working, what’s not. It certainly helps me in doing my job as I quickly learn where the knowledge is, who has the background info that helps move things along and such. When I do this I try and find something, anything that I and the other person have in common and I use that as a ‘glue’ point to move the relationship forward. I don’t just seek out those that I think I would naturally ‘click’ because that doesn’t give you a well rounded view of what’s happening, it has to be even with those that I might try to naturally avoid. Some of these people have turned into good friends over the years.

You went after opposition Leaders...

Leadership by walking around is great. And its its great to listen to your people, it should happen more often. But take it from this Chief, at some point they expect more than you just listening to them.

And that's when the difference between an exceptional leader and a good leader comes through.

Find the local watering hole, go for the organized tour so the people in that pub will recognize them later and then walk in later all by themselves.
Oh, I agree that there are ways, for certain. But, not all people have the ability to think along these lines or are willing to do so.

Sometimes the Leader is as much of a slave to the system as the people beneath them, very much so in a government department or Crown Corp.

I believe leadership, especially at the PO1/WO level and above requires a tough love of the institution. We need to be able to stand up and point out the institutional/organizational/system faults and failings. Its needs to be a love based ever seeking out improvement.

Everybody is both master and slave, buyer and salesman.

I have said this before. I have spent at least as much time selling solutions to my management as I have to my clients.

Here's the real question - which one of them appreciated (and acknowledged) your efforts the most?
