Replacing the Subs

I agree. They should go German/Norwegian on that boat. It's been designed specifically for the Baltic.
Perhaps they are looking beyond the Baltic as the real need for their subs?
The Baltic is a NATO lake at this point. Poland has global aspirations, their Army can contain Russia fairly easily at this point, so perhaps they are seeing a role for themselves in the Pacific?

It’s crunch time for Poland to pick a new submarine design

Tusk said the planned contract is to be signed at government level, meaning a greater level of political partnership with the offering nation can be expected.
This will be a decision, given the scale of the investment in our security, that we will make government-to-government,” the prime minister said.

A spokesperson for the Polish ministry told Defense News last May its experts assigned the highest scores to the offers placed by Germany, Italy and Sweden. That said, while these three bids received the highest scores, the remaining three offers have not been discarded, according to the spokesperson.
“We have prepared an industrial cooperation offer to Poland that involves a transfer of technology and cooperation with PGZ and the Nauta shipyard to set up a 100% local, independent maintenance, repair, and operations capacity in Poland,” Hyunrok Park, a manager from Hanwha Ocean’s Naval Ship Overseas Business Team, told Defense News.

Hanwha Ocean hopes to secure Poland as the first export market for its KSS-III-class sub, all the while setting sights on Canada and Saudi Arabia, among others.

Canada has shortlisted Germany’s thyssenKrupp Marine Systems, which is also bidding for the Orca program, and Hanwha Ocean as the two potential suppliers for the nation’s program to purchase up to 12 conventionally-powered submarines.
My guess is there is a real hard internal debate in their version of NDHQ and Cabinet, as to the role of their subs in the future and what will be the role of Poland going forward. They are also weighing their piggy bank and seeing if there is enough to go around to all the military related projects on their plate.

My selfish hope is they go 212 and clear the deck for us to go KSS III, I suspect that will be good for us, SK, NATO and Poland.

First Batch III in the water:

Bigger than I thought. I was under the impression this was a 3600t submerged boat, but if the article is to be believed, it's actually 4000t.

Some of the offset examples are strange, they are talking about adopting CMS-330 for the German Navy even though they have been actively interested in the system for years now? Same with the pledge to buy a bunch of Bombardier Global business jets, the Germans already have some and have been planning for a bit to purchase potentially some Global based AWACS platforms too. Rolling your already planned purchases into this deal as "offsets" rings a bit hollow, especially when the Koreans have been absolutely running circles around you for months with their partnerships/offerings.

They could be saying the quiet part out loud. In order to get foreign military sales approved, you often need to obtain offsets. But, I imagine it's supposed to be new offsets. Germany could be saying something like "While we are going to give you $xxx for CMS-330 no matter what, if you go with our sub, you can do some accounting juju using these numbers to obtain those required offsets . Can you so easily do the same with Korea?"

The article states that Poland wants cruise missile capability. That leaves the Shortfin and KSS-III. Problem awith the Shortfin is Naval group already has their hands full with Netherlands Orka and Suffren and 3G class. That leaves SK.

I had the same thought. And what on earth for?
Blowing smoke up ones ass was a regularly used medical procedure in the late 1700's thought to revive people near death(especially drowning victims). Was considered preferable(by the giver) to blowing air into their lungs via the mouth. Now it is only employed by people trying to sell you things.
