Makes you want to ask: "Whatever happened to the war artist?"
We've got great art and sketches from previous conflicts (WW1/WW2/Korea/Vietnam) but it seems to have failed since 1990.

If you are in doubt, visit the CWM or look up the controversy on some of the 'War Art' depicting Kyle Brown, Clayton Matchee, and Gen Dellaire.

As I type this, I am looking at two Giclees hanging on my wall done by war artists since 1990 - A Ted Zuber scene showing one of my Javelin Missile launchers on HMCS PROTECTEUR from 1990 and a John Horton scene showing my Sea King supporting a boarding in 2003 (how lucky can a guy get, getting two pieces of war art that he was personally involved in?). I think the War Artist program is alive and well!

Journeyman - I checked out the pages you refered to, and although there are a couple of dozen artists involved, the works themselves are not highly advertised
I also noted this page here: http://www.dnd.ca/hr/dhh/cfap/engraph/selected_e.asp?cat=2 which states that the pilot project began in 2001! I would say that this is a huge gap between the last era and the current era. And, why am I not surprised, the program mentions the name of every board member, but fails to name all of the artists involved, which is what I would be interested in looking up...

I then searched for these artists using the CFAP and CAFCAP acronyms and found only six artists. And most of their work wasnt 'war' art, it was capturing regular training activitiy in Canada or were stills of aircraft and ships.
In the end, I thank you all for the additional references, and I would like to be wrong on this, but I remain unconvinced.

How about a thread on "Whatever happened to Canadian war art?" where we can post all references to current and past war art? I searched the forum and couldnt find a matching topic already in place.
Instead of my just starting a new thread randomly, what would be the best category to put this under? Suggestions?
Or, if someone more familiar with the site knows of a suitable thread already in place, please let me (or us) know here.

We could put something in the Military History Section on "Where to find Canada's War Art". DND doesn't have a monopoly on it. There are various Government Agencies that have their finger in the pie also. The Museum of Civilization, the parent to the CWM, has control of most, but you may find that Agencies like the Legion also have some. Regiments have also, from time to time, privately hired artists to produce works.
It would be nice if some of the works found around the country could be displayed. There are many sculptures that are overlooked by many as they pass by everyday. Many in the Eastern Ontario Region know of the sculptures by Andre Gauthier who did the statue at the front gate to Pet and the Vimy Award. Others pass another great work when they enter CTC daily.
This may in fact require a whole new Forum in order to cover the various media that artists use. Not only Paintings, Watercolours, etc.; but sculpture and film, both still and video. Would you also like to include composers, who have written martial music?

I dont think we needed to go so far as to develop a whole new forum, but if we have room and there is interest, why not? it could fit into The Parade Square right under Military History.
I.E. Military Art and Culture:
- Military Films and Imagery (any film-based media)
- Military Literature (any print-based media)
- Military Artwork (Oil, water, charcoal, sketch, etc.)
- Military Statuary and Monuments (Brass, metal, marble, stonework, etc.)
However, too much culture may be contradictory to our aura of toughness and invincibility. I dread to think of a 'Military Poetry' category but Im pretty sure someones going to want to ask for it eventually...and I guess 'In Flanders Fields' is rather a good example of inspiring verse.
In case anyone is wondering why I got interested in this topic, its because I wanted a picture of 'Ghosts of Vimy Ridge' for a screen background and couldnt find an image with decent resolution...it kind of snowballed from there...
A lot of this material is already is present on the site (i.e. what is your favorite book, what is your favorite war movie, name that photo, etc.), just not all under one category.
Edit - I just double-checked and saw 'Literature and Film' under The Mess - perhaps just add artwork to that category?

Greymatter- I should have been clearer- A Giclee is a type of high quality reproduction of an original work of art. The two that I own are copies of a work by Ted Zuber and another one by John Horton. Sorry for any confusion.
