Rioting across UK cities (summer 2024 and beyond)

This all speaks to the fundamental question of why the UK wanted to retain NI rather than reunite Ireland with protections for non Catholics.

Because, amongst other things, NI is an industrial/technological powerhouse that the UK has paid gajillions over the years to develop. It would be similar to Canada handing over a large chunk of Ontario's industrial base to the USA, with a piece bit of Quebec's aero-space sector thrown in for good measure.

Eire is a largely unrepentantly inefficient agrarian society wholly depedent on EU subsidies that is yet invest meaningfully in industrialization, still struggles politically with the division of Church and State, and continually teeters on the edge of financial ruin, hanging their hats on their tax haven policies, as a result.

De Valera's 1937 constitution officially recognized the episcopalian Church of Ireland, Presbyterians, Methodists, Quakers and Jews but granted a "special position" to the Catholic Church and wrote the constitution to comply with the Church's teachings. The result was a society akin to Quebec before the 1964 Quiet Revolution that discouraged the continued presence of protestants in Eire.

That and a history of events like this give Irish Protestants in the North pause.

Good fences make good neighbours.

As opposed to the tax havens of the Channel Islands and hollowed out industrial base of England, run by a monarch who is also the head of the state religion?
