I didn't know about the subsidies.  Is it like that at all bases?  When I was a no-hook in Greenwood, the prices for the Mess Dinners were broken down by rank as well, the more you made, the more you paid.  It wasn't huge increments either, just made it fairer for the Ptes and Cpls.

Sounds like the child support system again  ::)  :P

This was the same Mess Dinner that saw pre-ordered (and paid for) Greco Pizza be delivered to the head table about 1.5 hours in. One for the books.  >:D

I LOVE Mess Dinners!!

Sounds like extras for someone  ;D

I use to make over 60K a year working construction in and around Toronto, but I had no job security decent benefits but when winter came around you could probably expect a layoff. Not to mention when it rained and everyone wanted to go home but you want to stay and work you loose a days pay. No holidays. Driving over an hour or more(usually more) in traffic to and from work. Sometimes you make friends at work but alot of the time there F**Ken DICKS. Waaa for your little 8k you can live without it and with a better life in the Forces.

My goodness, so many members are so quick to jump all over these new guys and perhaps taint a possible new recruit opinion of those of us serving.  I think we need a thread on forum edicate. We are all professionals at work, why not be the same in "our" forum. Oh yeah, and the pay is the least of things I have ever complained about, it's CM's that seem to make decisions that overide any pay factors in keeping people motivated. (sorry to all you hard working CM's that are working so hard to fill positions)

If you can't spell it, you can't use it.

The other side of that coin is the posts and attitudes of aspiring members that taint serving member's opinion on the people we recruit these days.

I just proved my own point, less than 10 mins after I use edicate instead of etiquette I am publicly corrected, very good! Perhaps less soldiering and more spelling lessons are in my future. As for criticism, there is such a thing called "constructive criticism". I hope I spelled that right or I am going to be edjamacated again. It's all good! :salute:

Just like the Military, we use guidelines to make things run smooth here;

Milnet.ca Conduct Guidelines: MUST READ

These are a must read, which I am sure you have done yourself.

Also the stickies here will provide more information on etiquette.

Welcome to the forums, please read, and participate.

Maybe I should have stated that I am not a member of the CF yet.  I leave for BMQ next month.

Best of luck at basic! Use your last month wisely and step up your fitness trg if you are not already. It will better prepare you mentally and physically, as well as hopefully avoid potential injury.
Cheers

I am mentally and physically challenged...

Did you mean you are being challenged both physically and mentally, or are you handicapped? I'm really not making light of your situation, just curious is all...

I know - I just thought it was, well, you know - especially since his profile depicts a formidable and very respectable service record and the fact that he is... RCR!!!  ;)

Cute, and if you want to be the one picking fly-sh## out of pepper.......
I was thinking of modifying my post for grammar. But I am not writting a formal paper here just putting my thoughts down, hence it reads the way I think. ( and yes you can make light of that if your comment was meant to be funny. )  If it was being serious then I will just shake my head grin and think your a moron.  ;D

LOL!! Not at all my friend, I understood what you were saying pretty much immediately - and liked your post immensely as I feel the same way as you do. It just struck me as funny that's all - considering your trade and all...  ;D

I understand that - I spent 3 years with 1 RCR in Pet (mid 90's/ Fox Coy obviously) - fun bunch o' guys!!!

Alot of you guys need to give your own damn heads a shake.  Some of you have been in the CF for many years now, and so I am forced to assume you likely hold some position of leadership.  Since when does leadership involve being a complete rude prick, especially to new people that dont know any better?

These new people come to this site looking for help and for information.  They are relying on people of experience to provide guidance and mentorship, not lectures, sermons and lashings.  In many cases, these people are guilty only of being new, or young.  We were all both at some point in time.  Instead of pushing people away and casting judgement on them, why dont we attempt to assist and mentor, lets allow the people at CFRC the task of passing judgement on who should and should not be a member of the CF.

Now, as to the question at hand.

The truth is, for anyone that has a decent education, and is not the ripe old age of 18, the $30,000 per year start salary is not very attractive.  However, it is important to understand a few things.  The first is that the Canadian Forces is one of the highest paid militaries in the world.  So, though the start salary is not anything to celebrate over, it is for the most part miles better then most other countries offer.

The other factor is pay rate increases.  Within 5 years you could reasonably be making $50,000 per year as a Corporal.  Still a relatively junior rank, and relatively little time in, but you will still be earning more then the national average.  Thats not too bad.  Add another 5 years or so and you could find yourself as a Seargent, and I beleive they are in the $60,000 per year range.  Again, not too bad at all.

A few other things to consider.  Early on in your career, you will have very little change to waste or spend your money on things that typically drain most peoples accounts.  If you run your affairs right and you are displined you may find yourself financially better off then you otherwise would have been on civy street.

So, the start pay isnt great, but you certainly dont stay in that range very long.  Before you know it you will likely be making better money on the military side then you could make civy side in alot of different vocation.  And, your doing something important that matters, not just trying to put food on your table.  To me thats the most important aspect.

For those considering joining as an officer, much of what I wrote above is the same, only the money is more lucrative.  Withink 5 years you can reasonably expect to be making well into the $60,000 range.  At about 12 years in, you likely have maxed out your Captain's IPC or are close to it which is just shy of $100,000 per year.  Not bad for ony having to have a university degree.

As others have mentioned though, there is more to consider then just the money.  This is not simply a job you are looking at, its a lifestyle.  Many things for you will change.  You need to make sure it is what you really want and go from there.  And dont let some of these old farts scare you away.  Some of them are no doubt cynical, as, for every decent thread started by someone like you, there are some pretty rediculous ones as well.

Good luck.

Just lookin' for a place to sound off, eh Mav'rick? We understand. I'm aware of the kinds of pressure you may be under right now with your studies and all, but I (as being in a position of a leader) would like to bring to your attention a couple of things - firstly the question was answered nicely and knowledgeably in about 40 other posts, and secondly, the question was asked almost a year ago. You really should read the posts when you have time - they're pretty interesting and I have personally learned a lot from many members of this site!!

I have learned quite a bit from members of this site too, however, the way newcomers are treated by some, not all, on this site, often leaves little to be desired.  If you have read the entire thread you will notice of course that I am not the only one to voice this concern.  There is a reason for that.  The first responces to this thread were not as nice as they could have been.  I just dont think, we, as a CF community, do ourselves any favors by responding to newbies this way.
