Strategic advice for RPing Canada in an alt. history 1936.

Considering that Canada has been invaded and occupied during World War One (and maybe for some time afterward) by the United States already, I would think Canadian military and government would learn from this and worked on building railways further north in case of invasion redux. This is a long other infrastructure obstacles and defenses.

In the Harry Turtledove books this alternate history game seem to be base on, US forces went up at multiple points to cut off the east-west railways and roads, like Winnipeg and the Rockies.

Since this is world war two, or years before, Canada can count on USA and CSA going at it again.

Destroying and holding Winnipeg is desirable from a US point of view because in 1936 (as is the case today) it is a rail nexus for everything running east-west in Canada, plus having the connection south to Chicago and points beyond.  If you hold Winnipeg, it cleaves Canada in two and forces the building of a new east-west line North of Lake Winnipeg.  Good luck doing that in anything like a meaningful time scale.

I ment why would the American forces want to actually conduct seige operations against Winnipeg? Investing the city makes more sense from an economy of force perspective, and accomplishes the same goal (cutting the east/west connections). Once the Canadians evacuate Winnipeg or surrender, then you can reconnect the rail lines and go to the next phase. This also keeps forces available to conduct operations against Ontario, or conduct holding actions agains the Union/CSA/Imperial Japan or whatever other enemies are out there.

Don't assume the Americans are going to play stupidly and follow you into your trap.
