OTTAWA â “ A suspicious package found at the Department of National Defence headquarters, Monday, is being tested for biohazards.

Lieut. Luc Charron says security officials identified the package as suspicious early Monday morning.

They shut down the building's ventilation system while a special team checked the package, and determined that it did not contain explosives.

But Charron says further tests are being done.

"Health Canada will take the package to its labs for more analysis, to be absolutely sure it did not contain any biohazards. So all appropriate precautions were taken to mitigate any risk associated with discovery of such suspicious package," Charron says.

He says, as far as he is aware, there was no evacuation of DND headquarters.

Most likely just someone with too much time on their hands trying to get a little bit of a rise out of some people and see how they'd react. When I was in elementary school, there was a package found wrapped in paper and marked as a bomb, some idiot decided to open it and found one of those huge boxes of a gazillion giant black garbage bags.

Then again it could also be a dry run for a terrorist group, to try and get a read on the response. In that case I would be pretty scared too.

Someone probably forgot where they put their double chocolate fudge Timmies donuts down. Although with the amount of them around the puzzle palace, you'd think they'd recognise them by now. ;D

Probably a filing cabinet full of Somalia documents.  Guess we missed it that day all 88,000 of us spent looking.  Oh well, better late than never.

In all seriousness; this is a rather common occurrence in Ottawa.  Some nut case or several nut cases are mailing these envelopes to various Government Departments on a regular basis.  It has been happening for the last couple of years.  Could be any one of dozens of whacked out groups who do this in protest, but don't have the courage to come out and publicize their grievances.

Aw, George, we wuz jes havin a little fun is all!  ;D Shucks...

"Aw, George, we wuz jes havin a little fun is all!  Shucks..."

The above refers to the donut and Somalia document jokes, NOT to the envelopes!

Tom

"double chocolate fudge"  doesn't come in white powder......It would have had to be a box of sugar coated Timbits.

and Tom, we don't talk about THOSE Documents..... ;)

Chances are its just some one playing a stupid joke . But it also sends a shiver up you spine  on how close some could get to important areas

Suspicious package found at NDHQ in Ottawa?

It's got to be either money, or good kit.    ;D

Thanks Tom that brought memories of how we all became a little closer that day.  Remeber the video the CDS sent out?  Ah the good old days

9 Step Formula for generating negative press and promoting fear.
1. sit around in caves for a few generations while Americans come and go, some hating you, others loving you (usually corresponds to every second generation)
2. realize that every army have a Pte. Pyle.
3. wait until Pte. Pyle is carrying the ashes outside while on fire picket.
4. create voodoo doll and cause a temporary blur of judgement that involves Pte. Pyle leaving the ashes in a suspicious bag while he runs across the street to grab a Lg. DD.
5. once due amounts of unrest and concern are generated release a press statement saying that this was a dry run.
6. civvies run in fear and buy gas masks. they later suffocate because they didn't open up the canister.
7. Pte. Pyle is meritoriously promoted to CDS (later turns out to be Mr. Smarty looking for his C7   ::) )
8. return to cave. crack open a few bud-ghani's and ccommiserateabout the good ol' days of camel racing.
9. another day in the CF. reveille at 0500 and then off to search for some C7's......

*on a more serious note, I believe that the level of security does not correspond correctly to the amount needed. That could have been a very scary incident indeed*

Well seeing that NDHQ, the most likely target for a terrorist attack against DND, shares an entrance with a mall bus-stop, maybe it was some kid's forgoten backpack? or a misplaced sweater from the GAP?? lol...

Seriously, if something truly evil ever does visit NDHQ, I suspect it will be a Ryder truck full of ANFO... that is unless terrorists refuse to disobey the "buses only" signs...

Good thing that the previously-identified security risk of having a public street pass under the building has been fixed... I'm sure that lone Commissionaire and his dodge neon blocking the entrance will thwart Osama and his buddies...  ::)

Its always fun to be in the building when you hear "A suspicous package has been found on the 1st floor of the North Tower, the ventilation system has been deactivated, do not be alarmed." And thats it.  Luckily, I work in the south tower... hmph

It was probably an iron and a tin of shoe polish. Few people there would recognize them. >:D

Cheers
