Table Top Strategy Games

The was also -Supremacy- which was Risk with an economic system and nuclear weapons. Awesome game that sadly always ended with a pissed off player going ballistic...

Yup, that's the one.

It was quite fun but we never got to finish a game without a bloody nuclear exchange bringing things to a halt. Then again we were teenagers, maybe more
mature players could actually finish a game...

Well they have now brought out an aniversery edition of Axis & Allies, I had a chance to play it this past weeked. The game structure is quite good however the have introduced a technology reserch feature to the game, the unfortunate part of this is that it greatly upsets the balance making it an option that might want to be avoided in game play.

Over the yearts I have played A&A, Risk and Car Wars.

Thank you for mentioning Supremacy and providing a link.  A group of us played a four day long version of that game in university during a snow storm one year. I could not remember the name of the game.

In case anyone is looking for a different one to try, I have played Settlers of Catan a few times. It is worth buying the expansion to add two more players. The standard game is for 2-4 players, the expansion allows for 5-6. The extra players adds more time to the game play.

I've been looking at this and trying to justify the cost for more of what D9er calls "my toys."
I always found A&A a good game nice mix of playability and realism both as  board game and the first PC version. The tech thing has always been there and could have the possibility of skewering  the game.

FOG who do really good ancients are supposedly coming out with Horse and Musket era up to and including Napoleonics for 15mm this yea. Rumor is Battlefront will also release FOW for Napoleonics soon.

Two other beer and pretzel game systmes I seem to waste time and money on are Wings of War (individual WW1 air combat with either cards or 1/144th minis) and Victory at Sea (WW2 naval combat).

I've recently discovered "Axis and Allies Miniatures".  What a fun game!  Doesn't take too long to set up or play, but what a hoot!  But then again, I finally got myself a copy of "Crescendo of Doom".

Being able to skip setup, play remotely, and save-resume games makes things much more convenient... but obviously nowhere near as fun as a 2-day IRL marathon.

risk and stratego will always be classics for me. im not too deeply involved in tabletop strategy and stick mostly to the mainstream as i am a big warhammer 40k nut

I remember some years ago there was someone I would play this game with and he would really get into it; using the stones as if they were troops and apply all kinds of war type strategies.  It was always a fun game.

The best table top game for strategy and tactics has to be Warhammer 40k. It is so in depth and customizable that you can make your army fit your playing style. I miss that game...

Sorry bud but I have to strongly disagree. Well I will give Games Workshop full marks fro keeping miniature war gaming alive when it seemed about to disappear into obscurity crushed between PC gaming and role playing ala D&D, that’s as far as I’ll go, and yes I’ve played 40k  and even made it to a couple of National tournaments and have the geeky trophies to show for it buried in the bowels of my basement.

The piss poor marketing technique of changing everything and forcing you to buy new armies and rule books every couple of months and the dumbing down of their rule systems so the target gaming group could collectively qualify for the Darwin Awards  was what made me leave after a couple of years.

There are so many other options out there both Historical and Sci Fi/Fantasy with better rules and better ( and cheaper) figures to waste your money on.
