Real talk though - I really hope Churchill can become a minor hub for national commodity exports. It will never be Vancouver, Halifax or Montreal purely based on geography but Id take another Thunder Bay in terms of scale.
Hopefully an Indigenous group like Membertou could show some of the Manitoba Bands how to participate and lead in the modern business world. Membertou took a suggestion from a Dalhousie Law grad of the Chief of the Band and implemented 9002 Business practices in Sydney and oh my has that changed things for the better. Membertou folks now KNOW they can be successful and have been.
Canada would be best served if a collection of extraction projects owned and better yet operated by Indigenous folks could then
be shipped World wide from Manitoba. Takes the Quebec, Toronto, Lower mainland virtue screamers out of the equation and helps our Allies/customers.

Treaty One has certainly been keen on economic development lately and stands to become major economic players in the prairies. We'll see how that plays out since there are some obstructionist reserves in between T1 and the Bay.

Arctic Gateway Group said the return of grain shipments is part of what it expects will be the most diversified shipping season in port history. Exports are also expected to include potash, critical minerals and industrial cargo, as well as supplies and equipment destined for Nunavut.

do indigenous corporations based on their reserves pay corporate taxes? With them being granted larger and larger portions of Canada and developing industries on them there should be some form of tax.
Good question that I do not know the answer to. I do know they hire a lot of taxpayers that work at the Hilton, Macdonalds, Gas stations and other business's on the Reserve. Not everyone is Mic Maw.

Generally the mythical "no income tax" for Indians* applies only to individuals and only for income earned while working in an Indian community. Corporations are separate individuals for tax purposes and the exemptions of section 87 of the Indian Act does not apply.
* the CRA uses the term “Indian” because it has a legal meaning in the Indian Act.
