The War in Ukraine

Haven't the Europeans, or at least France or Germany being talking about that for years? Probably the reason the idea has stalled is that the rest of Europe doesn't particularity like the idea of the French and/or Germans being in charge.
Plus France and Germany don’t want to foot the bill needed.

It’s easy to make statements and pass ideas around, much harder to put them into action when there is no will to do so.

I think the ukrainian proposal to replace american forces with Ukranian ones in europe could get traction as with the right investment a post war ukrainian would be a economic powerhouse of europe.

A Franco-German-Ukrainian triad would be an interesting change in dynamic.

I'm sure someone's already raised this on here: how much German hesitancy is a desire to let Russia kick the life out of a potential competitor? A well-educated, ambitious, populous, creative nation with aerospace, tech, and high-end manufacturing aspirations, and (especially for Europe) deep mineral and agricultural capacity would likely be a challenge to Berlin's economic position.

Also, how much would you have to bribe the Transnistria garrison to just let Moldova walk in? New passports and $1000 to **** off...

A Ukrainian-British Alliance would be even more interesting….

The UKR-German legs of that stool would also, sadly, offer up a juicy narrative opportunity for USSR 2.0, though. #PuttingTheBandBackTogether

True, assuming the UK wanted to do the heavy lifting as the sole dance partner.

Why would Germany and France give up leadership? - they have the two top economies and populations in Europe. Italy and Spain stand a modest third and fourth but are more culturally and emotionally part of the southern group. With the UK standing with one foot in and one foot outside of Europe there really is no one else with enough clout. Poland may be making the right noises and rearming well, but it's economy is still well behind the leaders. As for Ukraine - it has Canada's population but less than a tenth of Canada's economy. Despite a valiant defence, its economy will take decades to recover.

Frankly I am convinced that if a Trump administration does pull out of NATO, I'd give it 4 years and Russia attacks the Baltics, hungary would vote against invoking article 5, and the whole alliance either crumbles or unites.
Even if it's speculative it's a good reason for the CAF to divest itself of mostly all European hardware. Just do as Canadians do, shop south of the border.
