Toronto demo fragments into myriad issues at Peace activists rally

As an ardent opponent of the Iraqi Invasion and a fan of Micheal Moore, Its a pity that these folks are the ones who choose to represent me.

No...They definitely aren't doing you any favours...

'Nuff said.

If that makes me an evil monster and you don't want to hold hands with me, well so be it. At least my viewpoints and actions are internally consistent.  ,

Although I don't always agree with the content or tone of some of your posts, this stance is a good one. I think people need to be honest about why they joined. (Why they stay in may be a different reason...). As an institution we need to be a lot more honest about what a military force is for. I found the collective hand-wringing about " violent louts in the Army" to be silly: they were only describing the same young men who form the backbone of fighting armies everywhere, and often go on to become excellent soldiers.

Cheers

I agree.

In a discussion group for my International Relations class i got into a heated debate with a group of students with alot of anti-Bush, anti-War ideals. I told them that I was in the army reserves and that I agreed with many aspects of their point of view. I thought the war in Iraq was poorly justified. Bush was and still is an idiot, peace is better than war, and that we should work towards upholding human rights and prosecuting criminals.

They looked a little shocked and then asked: "well if that's the case than why did you join an institution that's sole purpose is to serve the will of states and kill people?"
My rebutle was: "Because, unlike you, I understood the mechanisms and institutions of global politics in which my ideals can most effectively be implemented. The resolutions of the UN and the charters it produces remain, at best, 'suggestions'. Its up to the state to implement and uphold them and that's exactly what the CF is trying to adapt to. You can protest all you want won't stop dictators from ethnically clensing other nations "
They didn't say a word after that.

Sounds pompous I know but they had quite the attitude when they asked me.

Hell I even Marched in a antiwar march (the big one just before the invasion)

and I was botherd at how littel people archly cared about the resons their was a war (a big list that I wont go in to hear)
but the people who march in the protests now that the war has happend.
just march for, the as I call it "The Warm Fuzzy Feeling"
they march so they can say they do something Political or radical (thou really nether)
the big march before the invasion may have prevented Canada from sending troops to Iraq.
but now its just so people can feel good about themselves, and still drive their SUV and live in suburbia with a clean conscience.
