Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

Quick overview/polling retrospective by Angus Reid & Co.
  • "Part One: Trudeau’s final days as PM
    • Declining approval and electoral fortunes
    • Majority say they’re pessimistic about the future of Canada
  • Part Two: Canada’s changing priorities
    • Top issues then vs. top issues now
    • The economy – Canadians’ optimism and pessimism
    • Some progress on child poverty, but income inequality still a concern
    • Health care – a system deteriorated
    • Crime and safety – concern rising
    • Immigration rises as top issue post pandemic
    • Canada’s international reputation"
Spoiler alert: lotsa indicators showing worse news now than before ;)

Wow. Surprised…not surprised

CRA can’t find all the $15B of CERB/IE-ERB/CESB overpayments….but it has no problem moving ahead with un-voted Capital Gains tax increases. Government prorogued? Not a problem. CRA says the government ‘intended’ to increase taxes within a side note in an earlier ways and means motion, so just as good as one of those Bills passed through that pesky and time consuming three readings and a vote each in the House of Commons and Senate for approval. Also, if future governments (like, say the Parliament that forms on March 25 led by Interim Liberal Leader and Acting-PM….Justin Trudeau, approve the tax increases, CRA has saved time grabbing more money from Canadians. Bravo CRA

Like I said earlier - quasi-Dictatorship from now until Parliament sits.

Overtly open... Isn't the foreign interference report coming out at the end of this month, which may well detail covert efforts by non-citizens in prior party shenanigans.
The Order-in-Council for that inquiry directs it to report to the Governor-in-Council (Cabinet). We don't have a sitting government right now. I'm not sure if the Inquiry can even continue to operate (i.e. pay staffers, incur expenses like printing, translation, etc.).

... Bravo CRA

Another great media reading exercise - note a different headlines on the same story from CP ....
That's why we have to 1) read a bunch of sources, and 2) don't just rely on the headline alone.

A simplified tax scheme, reduced income taxes, and massive cuts to CRA would by my number 1,2, and 3 moves if I were king for a day.

edit.... and on day one I'd fire all those bureaucrats who implemented this capital gains tax anyway given the circumstances.

I wonder what was really transpired when Joly and LeBlanc went to Mar A Lago a few days ago.
We’re about to have one heck of a wild year. No wonder PMJT quit without a fight.

In my humble opinion he is pretty spot on in terms of protecting us out of geographic reality. If Canada had Mexico as our southern neighbour instead of the US, we'd be spending billions more in national defense. If we had Russia as our southern neighbour, we'd be spending billions and billions more in national defense. Those are indisputable facts. We have been free-loading for decades and he's completely right in trying to make it stop.

We need to stop our bitching and being the cheap buggers we are and start to take the defense of Canada and of North America very very serious.

Yup. Always interesting when the bureaucrats game plan is revealed to major financial institutions in the country…”standard practices” and all…

In the case of the capital gains changes, Jamie Golombek, the managing director of tax and estate planning with CIBC Private Wealth, said the Canada Revenue Agency previously told accountants last year that it would follow “standard practice” and start applying the proposed measures on capital gains realized on or after June 25, 2024, even though legislation hadn’t passed.

I used to think his “51st state” talk was trolling Trudeau. Now I’m not so sure.

Even before this I was convinced we’re getting hit with massive tariffs no matter who our government is or what we do to placate the Mango Mussolini. I haven’t seen anything to dissuade me of this.

Having said that, we should still be doing the things David Asher was talking about in the Globe and CBC just for our own national interest.

But this is not the time for the Liberals to have a leisurely navel-gazing deliberation on their party’s future while they are still the government. We need an election yesterday.

Agreed.

Separate topic:

I saw that the Liberal Party is still going to use the same loosely-goosey leadership rules it did to make Trudeau leader, i.e. everyone and their dog will be allowed to vote.

Before, I had strong concerns about this due to how this is very susceptible to foreign influence and special interests (e.g. Team Hamas) getting another compromised candidate.

However I did see a suggestion about how this can also be used for others to benefit:

Maybe we should treat this as an open primary in the US. We should all vote in the LPC leadership whether it’s to vote for someone we would want as a PM, or someone who would be the weakest leader against the CPC. Since the LPC is in a particularly weakened state, I would lean to the latter, although it is more cynical. But that’s what happens when you bring in loosely-goosey leadership rules.

We could all vote for Pierre Poilievre for leader of the LPC...

After decades of dragging ass on defence and security, and Canada laughing off how we can ride the US coat tails... and now considering the major world disruptions going on including the CCP playing deep inside our house - I'm guess the US might be thinking if Canada won't secure itself (and by extension contribute to North American security), the US will do it for us...

Don’t pretend like having a friendly neighbour to its north hasn’t been an advantage for the US. Simply look at how much they spend securing the southern border vs the northern one.
We need to stop our bitching and being the cheap buggers we are and start to take the defense of Canada and of North America very very serious.
Agreed and we should because the only country who has ever threatened to annex Canada is the USA and it seems they are telegraphing that again. The US not being a reliable ally should indeed be part of our defence doctrine. With Trump and a potential maga heir after him is certainly a reality we will have to face.

Time to dust off Defence Scheme No. 1?
