Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

Economy might be starting to crack a little. The kinds of businesses that serve the kinds of spending that people turn off first, are feeling the pressure.

I walked by LuLu Lemon today.

Based on the fact that I had to walk on the road as the sidewalk was full of people trying to get in and spend, I guess that really expansive leisure wear isn't one of those things that get 'turned off' ;)

It was also Boxing Day, so, like Black Friday, people were there for the discounts. I wouldn't expect the same traffic even next week.

Well it does seem like shopping intentions over this season are up from last year despite the economy though.

The maritimes in particular are leading the way.

Is all that not the “ lipstick effect” though- where they are buying things like leggings because they can’t afford major purchases?

I wouldn’t put too much into line up lengths at a lululemon. There are still plenty of people out there with money.

Yes. As small businesses fold, people with money will step in to snap up the bargains. More assets will be concentrated into their hands. Socialists will be overjoyed.

You are being sarcastic I presume and ignoring the massive debt through out of control spending of Trudeau.
So we now have a carbon tax, and that carbon tax is now scheduled go be increased for the 3rd time since being introduced...

Each carbon tax gets multiple times before the consumer ultimately pays for it in the end.

We also pay more in personal income tax than we did before...

Yet despite the citizenry being taxed to death on everything...we somehow managed to double the national debt from $1.1T to $2.1T...

Do we have anything positive to show for ourselves as a country, after incurring an additional Trillion dollars of debt?

Where did that money go?

I've been asking that question since 2015.🙄

Ah, mandatory fun...if ever there was an oxymoron so easy to envision...

Better make sure that the brass for the casings is sourced here in Canada, and ONLY provided by a company that has a diverse work force! or you can take your summary execution and stuff it... 😤

And you better damn well recycle it...just sayin'...

...Overwhelmed at how offended I might currently be..."misogynistic, racist, sexist dirtbag...its basically 2024, does he even know that? Does he even know who I AM!? He probably didn't even know who I am...pffftttt...whatever..."

Daycares... I don't mind society providing some form of daycare in a sense. I'm so far out of my lane on this, I have no idea about what the government currently does that helps for daycare - truly not a clue either way

Dental care...I have mixed feelings on this recent announcement...

Heat Pumps...what the fuck is a heat pump, anyway? I've never even heard of one until like a month ago on the news... (either way, I'm in Alberta and we have natural gas here, soooooo...yeah. I think I'm good to go.)

Subsidized Pot...I mean sure. If they insist. Could think of a million better uses for our tax dollars, but at least with this we can see our tax dollars being used to help us out...

Free cocaine dispensers...I'm sorry, WHAT?? There are dispensers, that have replaced Pez with Cocaine? or people can walk up to a dispensery and get cocaine given tk them? And it's free for people? (Like is this a real thing??)

Expensive pipeline....just build the f**king thing already, holy hell. Consultations should have been doneaages ago now, there is clearly a plan on where its going & its design...just build it already. What's the hold up!?

(If it's because someone needs to be reconsulted because of a minor change, I swear with the back of my hand...)

Battery plants...heard a bit about this, mostly because it sounds super expensive. But is this a good thing or bad thing our government got us into? Anybody have an opinion on this?

Hurricane damage relief...I'm okay with this. It's the government using taxpayer dollars to help out taxpayers that got hit with a gosh darn hurricane (might not happen often enough for people to justify having hurricane insurance)

Vaccine plants.... F**k off. Stop slapping viruses together like it's playdoh time at the taxpayer funded daycare & we should be all fine and dandy (Fauci, you slimy f**k...lookin' at you. Oh yeah and Bill Gates you can take your mosquitoes and go with Fauci)

(A plant that can produce plenty of vaccines for Canadians if need be probably isn't a bad idea tho...)

Mask import/export business....Sure, why not. Mask manufacturing is probably a pretty standard ability we should have now.

ArriveCan App... either one of two things happened.

1. Sheer government incompetence and the government got hosed. It was quoted an amount that was absolutely ludicrous & paid that amount because it didn't have the first clue about App creation, and needed to get work started right away - and in its haste did a sloppy job of keeping track of the funds

(It wouldn't have been hard for the government to state right in the contract that if work is to be subcontracted out, the subcontractors need to be identified and the amount provided to them clearly stated & for what purpose...doesn't have to expose internal business processes, but enough to make sure it isn't money being laundered or embezzled, etc

2. The government played the incompetence card, but that money really went towards building the framework of a digital passport - something the government has openly stated it was working on in the past.

The ArriveCan App sounded better and more convenient of the times than digital passport we're quietly developing because Uncle Klaus told us to. The App did contain people's passport information, vaccination status, history of where they've traveled to and when, etc. So maybe it was a beta version of what will ultimately be a digital passport?

(Freeland already admitted we are working on developing our own CBDC, so a digital passport would go hand in hand)

Glamping Yurt Tents....the only word I recognize is Tents. No idea what this is.

Battery plants...heard a bit about this, mostly because it sounds super expensive. But is this a good thing or bad thing our government got us into? Anybody have an opinion on this?
A subsidy is a way of giving money to other people. If batteries are exported we are giving money to foreigners. Domestically, a lot of the subsidies for EVs and everything associated with them are ending up in the hands of people who already have enough money to buy expensive vehicles. If an enterprise is unprofitable without the subsidies (which is often the case, although not necessarily in this one), then subsidies are basically a transfer of money from taxpayers to enterprise owners/shareholders (as profits that would otherwise be unattainable). Rationally, we should let other countries subsidize battery plants and buy their batteries and we will have money left over to consume something in addition to the batteries.

A common response is "Oh, but jobs!". Most people don't hang around waiting for the perfect job to come along. Failure to prop up industries doesn't mean people go on the dole forever.

Canada doesn't have to be a world leader in battery manufacturing any more than it has to be a world leader in shipbuilding or large passenger aircraft.
