Pre-emptive pardons isn't surprising. It would be more interesting to know the exact scope of what is covered.

Pardons don't block investigations if people are determined to investigate and don't particularly care about taking matters to courts.

Did he really go behind his back or did he make assurances via the channels that are afforded him. Either Trump was a threat so assurances were needed or he wasn’t a threat in which case assurances were still needed.

Given how blatantly incoming members of the administration have threatened to prosecute people who haven’t even been investigated yet, I believe Biden is protecting them from politically motivated retaliation that was already pledged. Some of that was outlined in the article. It’s been no secret that incoming officials have pointed targets on all of these individuals. The course of any potential justice has already been perverted.

None of this hampers the Republicans’ ability to use congressional oversight mechanisms if they feel there are things that need to be inquired into.

It was not behind the administration’s back. This was already investigated in Senate committee. Both calls were made either at the direction of or in coordination with the civilian Defense Secretary appointed by the President with lawful authority to oversee such defense affairs.

Military liaisons and other lines of communication exist in port to help reduce tensions and mitigate potentially catastrophic escalations and errors forced by the intemperate words of politicians. I’m fine with Milley liaising with his counterparts overseas to ease fears that there might be a nuke fight, particularly given the apparent political instability in America at the time. Even absent that, he was acting in accordance with the civilian administration officials from Trump’s executive branch overseeing defense. He was fine.

If Alberta fuel prices are driven down by lack of foreign access then Alberta becomes a more attractive investment destination because of low energy prices.

Only if it’s still profitable to get it out of the ground. Alberta oil is generally more expensive to produce and refine.

Breakeven price on WCS in 2023 was 38.61 USD per barrel.

Current price on natural gas is
$2-3 per GJ and electricity is $.08-.09 per kwh.

Coal is about $200 per tonne.

Food grade CO2 sells for about $2 a lb or $4000 per tonne.
