Trump administration 2024-2028

Trump has successfully killed the American empires global reach. Looks a lot more like late Austria-Hungary than 1900 Britain. Very hard to bring that back once it has been lost.

One thing that the American public didn't appreciate was the fact since they were paying for everyone's defense, they also were the ones with the final say on everything. Now that Europe et all are stepping up that final say disappears.

Well, Europe has always had an issue 'stepping up' as you say. Without US involvement over the past few decades most of them would likely be Russian vassal states by now.

The EU is an economic union first, other things after that, and it shows in their shaky 'collective defense resolve' from time to time.

America’s hegemony in Europe is dead. Americans just don’t know it yet.

Hegemony only works if you remain hegemonic. You don’t get the benefit of hegemonic dominance if you stop eating the costs thereof. There’s an irony in that, given the overall situation.

We’re seeing the U.S. discarding soft power lightning quick, and they’re trying to make up for it with economic hard power. They didn’t factor in the agency and separate decision making of everyone else at the table. Only Americans are guided or blind by notions of American exceptionalism… To everyone else, in an increasingly transactional world, they’re just another potential party with whom to make deals. America has spent too long high on its own supply and forgets that their primacy was earned and maintained on an ongoing basis; it’s not purchased once and then a given henceforth.

Canada’s not in as enviable position, but Europe has all the necessary ingredients to reorient trade and military relationships to diversify away from the U.S. if it’s necessary to. Americans won’t like realizing that.

Indeed. America may want to remain a superpower…the superpower, but super power is only maintained when being able to credibly holding something or things over others’ heads. America is challenging Canada ability to lecture others incessantly with little positive to show for it…

Which is sunsetting pretty quickly…I give even odds to whether the RMB or EUR replaces the USD as the global currency. The greenback is dead man walking…

And cultures and states have different arts of their own deals

*America’s trust and reliability defenestrated a while ago…

It will have to endure some short-term pain for long-term gain, which puts it in a more diversified (non-beholden to *USA) position.

I see Trump has wimped out to Putin again. He's so angry with Putin that if Putin doesn't agree to a ceasefire in 50 days he'll put a 100% tariff on Russia . . . a country that already has almost all of its exports under sanctions.

We'll, at least he's allowing Europe to buy American weapons to send to Ukraine.

What a joke.

:(

Yup.

Yup.

Anecdotally (IMO), top of the “we don’t trust you (USA) anymore” list in NATO is Poland. Many Poles I spoke with think 5 (US) Corps should just go back home. Poland has solid protection deals recently *put in place with France and Germany and the U.S. is untrustworthy. Other NATO nations complain that the only NATO member ever to ask for Chapter 5 support is the one nation now telling the rest of NATO that it will pick and choose when Chapter 5 support is granted to any other member other than the U.S.

America is seriously under appreciating how badly it is destroying its political and security capital.
I certainly think (and frankly hope) the next middle eastern war they'll be going it alone. Maybe Israel.

Well this is a surprising turn. Very much sounds like a breakup with Daddy P, just need to wait and see if this new bark has bite.

Trump asked Zelenskiy if Ukraine could hit Moscow, FT reports

U.S. President Donald Trump has privately encouraged Ukraine to step up strikes deep in Russian territory, even asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy whether he could hit Moscow if the U.S. provided long-range weapons, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

It’s long been Lucy with the football. I don’t believe any purported support for Ukraine from Trump at this point until and unless Charlie Brown actually makes the punt. Arguably the only thing that could lend this some credibility is that Putin’s making him look like a chump, which he probably doesn’t like.

I wouldn’t bet against this being an orchestrated leak to try to make the 50 day deadline look like something that should be taken seriously.
