Trump administration 2024-2028

I’m sure they’ll find a way to avoid this but we’ll see what SCOTUS says.
Since the tariffs are taxes on American citizens and companies, a refund thereof would basically be a stimulus injection into the American economy, directly to people and companies who are already inclined to spend anyway, no?

MAGA gets its wish: Immigrant population declining

The nation’s immigrant population has declined significantly since President Donald Trump took office in January, new research shows.

And the trend is likely to continue since the Trump administration announced plans to expand its military presence and immigration raids to more cities.

“In January 2025, 53.3 million immigrants lived in the United States — the largest number ever recorded,” Pew Research Center reported in a study released in August.

But by June that figure had fallen to 51.9 million as immigrants left the country or were deported in greater numbers than those who arrived in the first six months of the year. It was the first decline in immigrant population since the 1960s, Pew said.

The share of U.S. residents who are immigrants dropped from “a recent historic high” of 15.8% to 15.4% in that span, while the share of immigrants in the workforce fell from 20% to 19% — a loss of 750,000 workers.

Shifts in political policies account for much of the declines, Pew explained.

I'd like to compare those numbers against how many Foreign university students left the US in May after the completion of their studies.

I would assume that's just the legal ones they know about.

No profit, no investments.... funny how that works ;)

Blow for UK drugs sector as Merck scraps £1bn expansion

US pharmaceutical giant Merck is scrapping a planned £1bn expansion of its UK operations, saying the government is not investing enough in the sector.

The multi-national business, known as MSD in Europe, said it would move its life sciences research to the US and cut UK jobs, blaming successive governments for undervaluing innovative medicines.

One science industry expert told the BBC that, following Merck's decision, many major pharmaceutical companies could stop investing in the UK.

A spokesperson for the government defended its investments in science and research, but acknowledged there was "more work to do".

Pharmaceutical companies have been refocusing on investing in the US following pressure from President Donald Trump, including threats of sky-high tariffs on drug imports.

Merck had already begun construction on a site in London's King's Cross which was due to be completed by 2027, but said it no longer planned to occupy it.

The company will also vacate its laboratories in the London Bioscience Innovation Centre and the Francis Crick Institute by the end of the year, which will lead to 125 job losses.

A spokesperson for the drug company said the decision "reflects the challenges of the UK not making meaningful progress towards addressing the lack of investment in the life science industry and the overall undervaluation of innovative medicines and vaccines by successive UK governments".

'Global uncertainty'

Speaking in the House of Commons, science minister Ian Murray said Merck's decision was "deeply disappointing" but that it was "a commercial decision for them".

The company recently announced 125 job losses and $3bn (£2.2bn) per year cost cuts.

Mr Murray said global economic pressures and the US trade policy had compounded its problems.

He added that pharmaceutical companies were getting a lower proportion of NHS drugs spending due to the actions of previous Conservative and coalition governments.

However, Conservative shadow science secretary Julia Lopez said the message from Merck bosses was "unsparing".

"Simply put, the UK is not internationally competitive", she said.

"The government must wake up, and do so now."

Time for an update on the attack on the Venezuelan "drug" boat. According to Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) who stated that the attack was carried out by an UAV. Plus, statements by various officials/experts that the attack was illegal.

In the second report (also from the Intercept) anon. officials have stated that the boat was actually hit twice, not just the single hit posted by the white House.

And finally, the Venezuelan government on Friday stated that one of its tuna fishing boats was boarded and held by USN forces for eight hours.

Another instance of shooting yourself in the foot.

“Korean workers are being treated like criminals for building factories that Washington itself lobbied for,” said a company executive in Seoul. “If this continues, investment in the US could be reconsidered.”

Ripple effect.

I guess now we know why the administration got rid of all the JAGs.

On this type of operation there would, in all probability, be an on-board representative of the Navy's office of the JAG. It would be usual that during such an engagement legal advice would be sought or offered during the targeting process. Commanders can choose to ignore a JAG opinion but there would be consequences. - At least in a normal administration.

Be interesting to be a fly on the wall.
