The US should check Putin's posts /correspondence. Bet there would be tons of super negative Trump posts.

And since there’s no way humans are able to rip through that stuff that fast, they’re probably going to be firing those selectors into analytics programs that have scraped social media.

Any businesses or regions dependent on foreign tourism need to be shitting bricks.

I suppose the proposals defenders will advance the customary "we only intend to use it for X" argument, where "X" is usually some variation of Very Very Very Bad People.

I almost would like to see the regulation go ahead, just to see what the first administration after Trump's (or a Trump-like successor) would do. I think they'd be strangely comfortable with the new power. It would have the same flavour as the Obama administration's frantic attempts to turn off their drone assassination powers before handing over to Trump. "We use asserted presidential powers wisely."

Proposed plan would apply to tourists of all countries, including those not required to get a visa to visit the US

It would be interesting to see what happens next years for the World Cup soccer games: tens of thousands of foreigners coming to the US and many of them would be using languages other then English in their posts. In reality, there would be so much info coming in they would probably have a hard time finding a place to store it all, let alone having the time to vet/translate it all.

Canada has the largest potash reserves in the world, with more than 1.1 billion tons — accounting for over one-third of the world’s reserves — compared to 220 million tons in the U.S., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The U.S. “does not have sufficient reserves to meet domestic demand,” Fertilizer Canada said, noting American farmers used 5.3 million tons of potash in 2023 while the country produced about 400,000 tons. Canada produced an estimated 21.9 million tons of potash in 2023.

I always thought we should put export tariffs on potash to fight the USA,but I realized that would come with significant pushback from the USA.

Yes and no, or not quite but close. Still, it's not all bad news out there.

This strikes me as a bit rich coming from America, where “civilizational erasure” is well advanced, and from a Republican Party, 37 percent of whose members say the Holocaust was exaggerated or didn’t even happen, 36 percent say the moon landing was faked, and 41 percent say 9/11 was an inside job.

Europe is rattled by Trump’s new doctrine, but the Kremlin is pleased, as you’d expect.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov approvingly pointed out the obvious, that the Trump administration is “fundamentally different” from previous U.S. governments. Russia welcomes the radical American departure from decades of U.S. policy because it is “largely consistent” with Moscow’s vision, Peskov said. “We consider this a positive step.”

There are qute a few “positive” American steps in Moscow’s direction at the moment that aren’t getting sufficient attention.
