Weird move and very surprising timing. He announced the composition of the board I think this morning, and I think before the China deal broke in the news. It’s difficult not to see this in the context of that. Potentially a weird sort of attempt at fence mending? It’s an interesting signal of respect, as I mentioned in the Gaza thread.

A lot of people will object to this for various reasons. It validates Trump, it validates what Israel did to Gaza, yada yada yada, to which I say, if Carney didn't take this spot, it wouldn't make the board go away, it would just (potentially) mean the board had more bad people on it.

Besides Blair and Carney, I’ve not been able to get a sense of what other non-Americans are in this Board vs the other ones which seems to be less ‘senior’.

I think that Trump does respect Carney on some level. As I’ve mentioned before, Carney’s former role as CEO to Bloomberg in NYC does put him in some of the same circles of Trump in the past.

I know that people on here dislike Carney for various reasons - but I do not believe that we have any else politically that has his level of professionalism, connections in the business sense and political sense around the world that Carney has - full stop. Having a leader with the respect he has made for himself in the business world and in the central banking world really is opening more doors for us than most people here (and in Canada) realise. Obviously he needs to use that to Canada’s benefit. The most pressing thing as each day goes by is the F35 decision - this needs to be finished ASAP.

He got someone else's shiny trinket today.

I have serious doubts this Board of Peace is going to have a very big impact. That region has been in religious conflict for thousands of years.

Concur. I’m less interested in the ‘board of peace’ in its own right, and more interested in what the signal is here regarding Trump and Carney and, by extension, Canada.

My guess is that Canada is still seen by many as an "honest broker", so adding Canada adds legitimacy to the process.

He has a lot of street cred. He's already worked extensively trying to creat deals/better conditions for the Palestinians. He was instrumental in getting the Good Friday agreement signed, and had been endorsed for this role by the Palestinian Authority.

The people who hate each other all still live in the same general area... (minus the recent 'not genocide' genocide that didn't happen but happened)

As long as the same groups of people live in the same general area, the issues & history will remain fresh and inflamed. (Probably moreso know than at any point in my lifetime)



This Board of Peace sounds good...I think...

Until we remember it's just a bunch of politicians sitting at a table & talking about politician stuff...so same as now basically...

I think Trump, at some level, is intimidated by bankers since he’s had to go to them so often to stay alive. That may wear depending how often Trump gets Carney to concede things for an illusory trade deal.
