Delusions of grandeur
In a lot of ways it is. Trump has courted a number of different groups to gain his support. Some denominations support him more than others. If I were a devout Christian, I would think that would be blasphemous and contrary to the First Commandment.
Same time that the Knight's Templar were burned at the stake, once the French crown controlled the Pope because Philip IV of France owed them too much money. Something I could see Trump trying to do in different ways. Here’s a quote that stood out to me. I’m not Catholic, but if this happened, I find it extremely disturbing.

White evangelicals remain among Trump’s strongest supporters, but less so than a year ago
There has been an 8-percentage point drop since early 2025 in the share of White evangelicals who support all or most of Trump’s plans and policies.www.pewresearch.org
I think that sort of evangelism in the IS is as much cultural as it is religious, and to be blunt, the purported religious values seem very flexible in order to conform to the culture. It is what it is.Not surprised at all.

Warning. What follows is my personal opinion. Not intended as a slight on people who identify as Christians or Mormons, or any other belief systemI have a cousin who is an ordained Wesleyan minister, and is also a big Trump supporter... It seems to be a somewhat normal sort of mental gymnastics for many American Christians.
That's fair, it may play a part. I also suspect the echo chambers in which they exist, which portray the other side as being comprised of degenerates and pedophiles, also play a significant part.Warning. It could be that religious belief requires a suspension of credulity - also called faith. Once one is prone to making "leaps of faith" in the absence of evidence, false idols are equally "believable". This could explain the fascination with celebrities etc.
Again, my opinion.
