Japan, still desperate to keep their currency above 160 yen to the dollar, and the USA, desperate for Japan not to sell off 1.1 trillion in US treasury bonds, had the USA buy yen.

18 days later, the yen is back to 160.

One of two things is about to happen. Either the Japanese start selling off a bunch of US treasuries, driving up US borrowing costs, or the USA is stuck in a permanent defense of the yen.
