Trump administration 2024-2028

Actually. There is no requirement for more law: The US Senate voted only this summer, 86 to 11 in favour - which is as close to bi-partisan as you can get - of the Lindsay O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The House then passed it 262 to 159, again, pretty bi-partisan. The act already makes it illegal for the US, or anyone else for that matter, to import any Russian energy products until they get out of Ukraine.

Don't know if Trump ever enacted it or vetoed it, but in any event, it would put him on the wrong side of Congress.

Quite frankly there are members of current GOP who if Trump publicly offered to surrender the the US to Russia. The harshest thing a couple of members of both houses would say is that " They're pretty sure he had a good reason for doing that and we should just give him some time to better explain it all".

Or “I’m very concerned about this”.

Sadly there are a number of conservatives both in the US and Canada that have fallen for Russia's "Bastion of conservatism" disinformation BS. The new "Useful idiots". I give the Russians credit, they were able to take over western leftwing organizations in the 1960,70 and 80's and now pivoted to doing the same to the far right.

:ROFLMAO: Trump signed it into law on September 18th.

You just can't make this shit up.

I took a look at that legislation (H.R. 5334) because its rainy and I'm bored and I can't see where it directly prohibits buying energy products from Russia. It prohibits a number of financial and business transactions, and prohibits a US entity from exporting energy products to Russia, but if it prohibits their import to the US, I'm missing it.

In case anyone is wondering here is (according to AI) the amount 500,000 tonnes of diesel translates into:

500,000 metric tonnes of diesel is approximately equal to 3.7 million barrels.

Conversion factors vary slightly by product density, but standard industry calculations indicate:
  • 1 metric tonne of diesel equals roughly 7.33 to 7.5 barrels.
  • Based on the 7.33 bbl/t factor, 500,000 tonnes equals 3,665,000 barrels.
  • Based on the 7.5 bbl/t factor, 500,000 tonnes equals 3,750,000 barrels.
This volume represents approximately one day of total U.S. diesel consumption.

Could be, but that's a different piece of legislation. Actually, it would be the section above - Sec. 2 - that prohibits the importation of Russian energy products.. The highlighted section actually allows the President to terminate the prohibition (i.e. allow it) under the process laid out.

To me, that is an example of a long-standing problem in the US legislative process. Congress passes a law, then throws in a provision that allows the Executive to unilaterally toss it. There are many examples of Congress abrogating their legislative responsibilities.

Agreed. Trump just needs to sign an Executive Order to cancel HR 6968. So far he hasn’t issued an E O. …yet
