US Presidential Election 2020

If I was living in the US and voting for Trump, I wouldn't be telling anyone considering how polarized things are.

It's the same reason my wife and I opted against putting a CPC sign on our lawn - our area is full of Liberals and we don't want any trouble.

The GREAT, BEAUTIFUL crowds in Tulsa are huuuuuge!!!

Lol.

Yeah saw that on the news. Someone won’t be happy...

But at least it has less of a chance of becoming a COVID super spreader event with those numbers.

Nah, from photos inside the stadium, yes it’s half empty, but they’ve all crowded down into the lower half.

I've already seen a bunch of articles that say protests had no negative implications for COVID-19, so why would a rally?

I would imagine that a large (not as large as they wanted) crowd indoors with said crowd asserting their right not to wear a mask increases the risk.  It may actually be why people opted to give this one a pass.  Considering numbers are up in Oklahoma.

At least they were handing out masks and face shields.  But I suspect that is in case someone tries to sue over COVID.

Or maybe it was a bunch of teenagers.  If this is true...wow.

100% any large gathering indoors (or in close proximity outdoors) is stupid right now.

However, the protests recently set a precedent IMO. I support legitimate protesters (not rioters) but if I'm going to support them, I have to support the right for any group to assemble peacefully regardless of the cause.

So either enforce social distancing, or don't. If they can have CHOP/CHAZ in Seattle, they can have a Trump rally in Tulsa. The problem is that there is a narrative afoot that tries to show one as inspirational, while painting the other as a public health risk.

If that is indeed true, one could make the case that AOC just violated a rather significant rule of etiquette for sitting members of government in the US. Possibly a law, but I don't know enough to be sure.

Less than 6,200 showed up.
Andrew Little, the Public Information Officer for the Tulsa Fire Department, confirmed to Forbes on Sunday that a tally taken by the fire marshal clocked the turnout at just under 6,200 people, far fewer attendees than the campaign expected.

I've always found the idea of secret ballot confusing if you put a sign on your lawn.  Granted, no one can pester you at the booth but putting up a sign is a big neon light-up "I'm voting for this person" sign.  You might as well shout out who you're voting for instead of casting a secret ballot.

It's not as if the action wasn't predicted.  Though Politifact didn't think it would be as successful as it was.

People are reserving tickets to Trump’s Tulsa rally to leave empty seats. It probably won’t work
https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/jun/16/people-are-reserving-tickets-trumps-tulsa-rally-le/
President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign says 1 million people have registered for tickets to his June 20 campaign rally in Tulsa, Okla., the first since the outbreak of the coronavirus put a halt to large-scale gatherings months ago.

But some social media users say they bought tickets with no intention of going.

"It would be really interesting if we all went to events.donaldjtrump.com and scooped up all the tickets for the rally in Tulsa so he was speaking to an empty crowd," said a June 12 tweet, which was screenshotted and shared more than 10,000 times as part of a Facebook post.

The Facebook post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.) Similar posts appeared elsewhere on Twitter and in widespread TikTok videos.

The post’s suggestion caught our eye, in part because Trump has boasted for years about the crowds at his events.

Could anti-Trump protesters really buy up enough tickets to leave Tulsa’s BOK Center mostly empty? It doesn’t seem likely.

"That is the silliest idea I’ve ever heard," said Bob Jack, chairman of the Tulsa County Republican Party.

. . .

1,000,000 requests for tickets. 6,200 entered the first come, first served (with ticket) event.  So a 0.62% conversion rate . . .  or would that be a 99.38% success rate for the "teenagers".  Even if a quarter of that 993,800 difference was due to false requests, I would consider it a remarkable commitment on the part of those who sabotaged(?) the rally.

What "rule of etiquette" would that be?

Etiquette would be the last word I’d expect to see associate with anything to do with President Trump. It’s about his finding the edge of the envelope of public/cultural/institutional/constitutional acceptability, and often beyond, to accomplish his goals.

I too would be interested see the codification of the etiquette that AOC is supposed to have breached.

When did he ever show her "etiquette"?

Pretty hard to imagine President Eisenhower or Kennedy behaving like he does toward a woman.

Saw this quoted in Reply #705,

"But some social media users say they bought tickets with no intention of going."

As far as I know, it was a free show.

It has been my experience that many social media users are not overly committed to pre-existing conventions of grammar and language.  Besides, agreeing (even in jest) to attend any function at which Mr. Trump is expected to speak may be a high price to pay for some.

>Pretty hard to imagine President [..] Kennedy behaving like he does toward a woman.

Kennedy was worse.  What sets people like Trump apart is that he doesn't have a facade of gravitas and respectability.

Kennedy was a serial philanderer who made Trump look like a rank amateur, in that particular regard.

I didn't mean between the sheets.

Call me old fashioned, but I never read of Ike or JFK talking about women that way. At least not in public.

Who is to say? The 1960s were a different time. Women, in general were regarded differently and the press was more willing to cover for that aspect of Kennedy’s life.

Not defending Trumpian behaviour. Just not sure we are comparing apples to apples.
