USMC Clarifies Tattoo Policy

Something to add to it too, do you think that the regulations should be different between men and women?  Why or why not?

I don't. I have some...I want more!!  ;)

Ditto for me!  They're addictive!  But do you think that women should be restricted in where they get them more so then men?  Personally, I think a full sleeve looks different on a woman then a man.  Mine I have where you can see them if I want to wear something to show them, but otherwise they are hidden.  Of course, that could change as I run out of places to put them all!  :D

I know a couple of girls with sleeves. They are not for me...but they like them; I guess they wouldn't have them otherwise. Neither are Marines...so it's all irrelevant anyway.  :)

Hmmm....
Some time ago, there was a CPO1 who was in line for a promotion to NDHQ...
IIRC he had some on his forearm and some on his neck..........

The CF told him his visible tats had to go..... and they paid for their removal.

As I said in an earlier tattoo thread, I'd apply the same rules as I told my boys before their first ink:

1) Nowhere that shows, unless you want to show it
2) No names/words, and
3) You have to tell your mother.

We'd see how tough some troops are when faced with momma's ass-whuppin'  ;)

As for DND paying for tattoo removal......  >:(  I had to pay big bucks for the one I had removed.

I don't know what the CPO1 you refer to had on his arms...but obviously soemone ruled they had to go. Perhaps it was the nature of his as I know a couple CWOs up there with forearm tats that didn't have to come off.

Guess you should have followed your own rules, eh?  Too bad they don't have training tats too. ;)

So..... Laser, abrasion or surgical?

Old school tats.  Not quite appropriate for sharing with the ladies....
will look up my old messages when I go back to the office on Monday.

I mentioned that I was an officer who had visible tattoos and there were several posts made about me being "unprofessional" and probably looked down upon behind my back.

I'm willing to bet the people who would call you unprofessional behind your back aren't the types to sleep outside over night  ::)

Seen. Being the daughter of a sailor I can appreciate those. Others can not I guess.

Michael,
You ask where to draw the line...in all honesty I think that the current CF policy is a quite reasonable one and achieves the neccessary balance.  It entrenches the member's right to have tattooing (a fine military tradition in my opinion), however the line is drawn at anything that may be seen as offensive.  I beleive that is a common sense approach to the issue - tradition is upheld, members may indulge - but within set policy.  As for being unprofessional in appearance I suppose that is a bone of contention.  The demographics are definitely changing with regards to those who are getting them as well.  I think tattooing is becoming more and more commonplace in North America.  All those cute butterfly tattoos on the university girls will inevitably be on grandmothers sporting them at their quilting parties.  Purely anecdotal...but my last unit had only one officer WITHOUT a tattoo - and it wasn't the commanding officer.  :skull: DBF

PS  They most certainly were not Flawed Design.  One was a university student, and the other turned out to be a computer programmer.

Ones on the forearm had to go? Ikes! It must of been a bad tattoo. I got my kid names on my forearms. I don't think I have to get those remove. No one has said anything for the pass 2 years.

removing the ones on my forearm would be....interesting...

They look different indeed, on a man I call it interesting art, on a woman I call it sexy! ;D But that's just me  :P >:D

I agree with everything except number two. I have both my sons names on one tattoo because no matter what happens they will always be my sons! Wives names though, well we all know what the divorce rate is like in the military these days! :o

As an aside, I'm still on wife number 1, 18 years and counting! ;D

But you did call her "wife number 1". You're leaving yourself outs.  ;D

My only rule is asking myself what will it represent to me in 20 years time.Lets face it if my mother had allowed me I'm SURE I would have MC Hammer and Ninja turtles on me at the age of ten....that would be quite embarrassing now!I stick to something that I will never change.Flags, decorative tribal stuff, names of people I HAVE BLOOD RELATION TO!Not my wife,NEVER.

My next one is across my stomach with a 8 figure grid and map designator of my true home (Nfld).
Just saving money now.

Oh and for me I won't put it in a place I cant hide it.IE.Face,hands,neck etc. That's just a personal thing.

From what I seen however "AMY" turns into a nice buffalo coverup!
