USMC Clarifies Tattoo Policy

I guess the Marines would not have liked the Canadian Forces Centennial tattoo, it was big but
not garish.Seriously though I backed up the RCMP in a New Westminster prison riot in the 70s this
experience convinced me that I would never have a tattoo. Those morons, the prisoners not the
RCMP,were covered with tattoos ,must be a lowlife thing
                                                          Regards

Pleased to meet you Alberta!! I'm Vern, the lowlife from New Brunswick!!  ;)

I think he's talking sleeves, and covered in garish tattoos though.

All right guys,

His post is about prison tattoos and prisoners being covered in them!! Even I hate the look of those kind of tattoos!

I get his point.  ;D

STOP!

Check the poster's profile, specifically the age.  It's a view from his generation's standpoint. Try to put that in perspective before you take offence (however minor) or respond (with whatever pretense of levity).

WOW thats the fastest response I have had to a post.Lighten up young people, its a generational
thing.I guess you didnt get my little joke about the Centennial Tattoo.

I'm willing to bet the people who would call you unprofessional behind your back aren't the types to sleep outside over night  ::)

When I joined the Navy in 1977 I was told in no uncertain terms that "Officers do not get tattoos." Lots of the sailors got them and they were not discouraged from getting them. In certain foriegn ports tattoo parlours were out of bounds because they were not sanitary. I remember a guy being charged for getting one in the Phillipines as the CO had placed the parlours out of bounds and buddy showed up with a fresh tat of an eagle etched across his chest on Monday morning.
I never got one, simply because I don't personally like them, not because I bought the "Wardroom line" on the subject, but I think that's where those comments came from SeaDog, from old timers. My observation at Stad is that lots of folks have em now, of all ranks. I must admit that I find some of the locations for female tats a little "off-putting" but that's my personal thing and I don't let it get in the way of how I treat the person.

Come on Padre, you can't just throw out a line like that without details.

What sort of locations? Are you seeing them professionally or just socially?  ;)

I also heard that when I was a soldier in the '70s, though there was little restriction or consequences for the ranks getting tattoos other than visibility.  (A particular memory is of a soldier who had a certain statement tattooed along the edge of his right hand so that it was visible while saluting.)  But, during my commissioning process in the '80s, I was asked in the BPSO interview whether I had any tattoos and he mentioned the inadvisability of an officer having them.  I didn't have any because I also didn't find them personally attractive.  Does this mean I now join the "Old Farts Clubs"?  However my personal likes and dislikes hasn't hampered social interaction with females who may have ink though (as you said) it is sometimes surprising where you find them.

Well it's like this. I do a lot of weddings and the gowns that "ladies" wear at weddings are rather low cut and revealing if you catch my drift. Personally I don't find a woman with a tattoo on the top of her
breast(s) or shoulders all that attractive. But then I'm an old fellow and the women that have tattoos there don't give a rat's pattute what is attractive to me.
Again I don't treat anyone any different because of how they look....it's just what I find personally attractive or not.  ;)

Ha ha....I can assure you that my admiration/approval of body ink is not a question that comes up at pre-marital sessions.  ;)

Interesting (and funny) reading.  I have two tattoos, a leafy wreath on my upper right arm and a wolf's paw with my daughter's name on my left shoulder (sorry Padre  ::))
I don't think tattoos should be the big concern here, although, I have seen some huge ones on people's necks that are pretty distracting.....looks like mold or something.  ;)
What I have seen a lot of are numerous piercings that are against regulations for both genders.  I guess the most common is tongue piercings which are usually pretty obvious.  In the mess hall last week, I saw a guy wearing an ear piercing while in civvies.  I'm quite sure if I could spend longer than half an hour at the kindergarten they call the Huron Club here, I'd see a lot more.  ::)

If they are not on duty, they are allowed to wear them as per dress regs:

7. Male personnel shall not wear earrings or
ear-sleepers on the ears while in uniform or on duty
in civilian clothes. When wearing civilian clothes off
duty, jewellery and accessories will preserve a
conservative, disciplined, professional appearance.

Holy crap!  I stand corrected.  When did that change??
This guy was not what I would consider conservative, disciplined or professional but you should see how most of them (and the girls) dress in civilians.  Like they're going to a pick-up joint..... :o  Oh, wait, maybe they are!!  ::)

Next they will be banning Big Garish looking Marines.

On a side note the worst Tat I ever saw was on a girl working the counter a Laura Secord. She had a "Gitter-er-Done" on the back of her neck. Can anyone say Trailer....
