There are not that many closeup photos on the Internet of that side of the conning tower, but yes, I think you are right. Also, on the very front tip of the conning tower looks like more damage.

The top of the casing is "sanded" to the bare metal and on the side, the black of the casing seem to be much faded to an even point about 8-10 feet down from the top. She definitely surfaced in ice somewhere, and likely more than once.

Subs surfacing in ice!

At first I thought that the boat in question may be the one shown in the 60 Minutes piece from this Sunday past (go to 10:27), however on reviewing the program, it was the Hampton.  Still an interesting report, though the word "Canada**" wasn't spoken once despite the reporter arriving via Twotter and footage of soldiers in CADPAT (I assume that they are the troops responsible for housekeeping, i.e. keeping the scientists alive).

The black officer on the bridge is the submarine CO, Cmdr. Melvin Smith. I suspect that one day he will be a flag officer,unless he stumbles.I think he is at the end of his command tour which is usually 2 years.
