This image shows the Carter returning to base flying the Jolly Roger. Naturally this has sparked speculation. ;)

Anyone hear of any ships recently disappearing in the night?

Maybe NK is missing one of it's "fishing boats".................. ::)

AmI seeing things or is that a big dent in the top of the con tower below the esm mast?

There are not that many closeup photos on the Internet of that side of the conning tower, but yes, I think you are right. Also, on the very front tip of the conning tower looks like more damage.

It doesn't seem to stand out as bad from this angle.

The top of the casing is "sanded" to the bare metal and on the side, the black of the casing seem to be much faded to an even point about 8-10 feet down from the top. She definitely surfaced in ice somewhere, and likely more than once.

I must admit, with all the problems the RCN's subs have had, I look at this submarine with lust in my heart.

Look at us! A bunch of intelligence analysts!

Subs surfacing in ice!

At first I thought that the boat in question may be the one shown in the 60 Minutes piece from this Sunday past (go to 10:27), however on reviewing the program, it was the Hampton.  Still an interesting report, though the word "Canada**" wasn't spoken once despite the reporter arriving via Twotter and footage of soldiers in CADPAT (I assume that they are the troops responsible for housekeeping, i.e. keeping the scientists alive).

**Okay, it was mentioned once, as one of the Arctic Nations, however no reference in conjunction with the expedition/camp

The black officer on the bridge is the submarine CO, Cmdr. Melvin Smith. I suspect that one day he will be a flag officer, unless he stumbles.I think he is at the end of his command tour which is usually 2 years.

Why a U.S. Navy Spy Submarine Is Flying the Jolly Roger

The skull and crossbones flag is traditionally flown to celebrate successful missions—but just what has the USS Jimmy Carter been up to?

Speculation with photos and diagrams incl the Sub's modifications.

And, yup, the Seawolf boats are punching thru ice...
