i was o my way back from BC t saskatchewan monday and by CFB shetfield (not quite sure of the name) in alberta of #1 highway i seen a rather lager convoy of light tucks, apc‘s and smaller tracked tanks just off the railway and then about 3 times as much on a train its self. now i was wondering if it was new stuff coming in or old going out, seemed like alot for one CFB,then again i dont know if theres an armour div. there or not, oh yah not to mention the 2 soliders siting there eating lunch.lol, seems like a slack duty. :)

oh and dont mind my broken words , i not simple my keyborad is jut on its last leg. sorry

I think yo umean CFB Suffield. That CFB is where the British Army does training IIRC. I also think that‘s where our army has a training facility to, or is that CFB Shilo?

1 CMBG has done several brigade-sized excercises in Suffield. They may be doing another one, and that‘s why you saw the big vehicle convoy. Maybe there‘s someone from 1CMBG here who can confirm that. Were all the vehicles and uniforms Canadian? If they were, that would tell us a lot.

Suffield is where the Brits play... Wainwright is the primary training ground for our boys. Shilo is pretty much for the Guns right now, the Germans moved out a while back.

Those vehicles that you saw were most probably British APC‘s and light vehicles. They routinely rotate their fleets from England to Alberta, that way they can keep a fleet that is evenly broken in.

Does Canada have any ‘small tracked tanks‘? Other than the Leopard and a few specialty things, its mainly wheeled vehicles?

We have the M113, but that‘s an APC and not a tank. A vehicle maintainer in LdSH told me that track is the most difficult think to keep running. Apparently tracked vehicles require 5-10 hours of maintenance for every hour they‘re actually driven.

Also, the newer things we have (LAV III, Bison etc.) are all wheeled, but they‘re not really tanks either. Our main battle tank is the Leopard, and, to my knowledge, it‘s the only real TANK that we have (as opposed to being an APC, or other purpose vehicle).

Again, armoured people feel free to correct me.

The arty boys have the M-109 SPG (self propelled gun), they are being phased out as I type.
The army also has a tracked resupply vehicle called the M-548. It looks like a pickup truck, but with tracks. There is also the BV-206, a tracked over-the-snow vehicle.
Obviously the leopard chasis has its variants too, ARV and Bridge Layer. Same goes with the ADATS, it uses the M113 chasis.

Just to answer Medic‘s question...I know that we have a brigade excercise in Suffield staring the 19th of OCT. Most of our "A" vehicles have been flatbedded down there from Edmonton. I would assume that 2nd BN‘s Lav‘s would have been railed down but don‘t know that for a fact.

We now also have the MTVL, appearing in various layouts. All it is, is an upgraded / stretched M113.

M577 (I think) or Queen Mary, M113 with a large box ontop (CP / AMB)

Our reserve unit has exercises in Suffield also, so it‘s not just the British or regular force Canadians.

It‘s useful for the British as the terrain is very desert like; not as useful for training for temperate climate/woodland type terrain, as there are no damn trees there!
