It's nice to see some of our taxes are actually being used to prepare for the security of the 2010 Olympics...

Police eye armour for 2010

The Vancouver Police Department could become the first law enforcement group in Western Canada to bolster its fleet with a pair of armoured rescue vehicles.
VPD Sgt. Norm Webster says the squad's emergency response team has an "urgent need" for the vehicles.
"It's a vital piece of life-saving equipment," said Webster, who leads one of the VPD's four emergency response teams.
The U.S-manufactured vehicles, which would offer ballistic protection from high-powered rifles and explosives, could be used in situations involving armed suspects.
VPD officials hope to have one, or possibly two, armoured vehicles before 2010.
"I'd like to have these in place prior to the Olympics, but it isn't just because of that," Webster said in an interview. "We have a clear, demonstrated need for vehicles or equipment that can provide ballistic protection for firearms that are commonly found in Canadian households, that we currently do not have."
The vehicles would be built by U.S. SWAT truck manufacturers LENCO. The price tag for one comes in at $192,000 US, but it might not be taxpayers shelling out. Senior VPD officers hope the non-profit Vancouver Police Foundation will fundraise the money required.
The city would be on the hook for about $3,000 yearly in operating costs.
Only the Toronto force currently uses armoured police vehicles.
