More than 6,000 Afghanistan Veterans along with their family members are expected to attend Afghan Veterans Appreciation Day events at Legion branches. The events will be held across Canada in August and September.
Based on registration numbers, more than 200 branches are participating in this national initiative and an additional 50,000 well-wishers are expected to show their support at parades, barbecues, and other unique events.
This special day of celebration and commemoration honours Canada’s service men and women, and their families, for their commitment and dedication during the Afghanistan combat mission and also those who will continue to serve in Afghanistan as the mission transitions to other activities.
“We have received a tremendous response to this initiative”, says Patricia Varga, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion. “Our branches and members want to show their support for our Canadian troops abroad, and here at home,” noted Ms. Varga, “and we want to share our pride and show our thanks. We hope other Canadians will do the same,” she added.
For those who are not able to attend an event in person, the Legion has created a special Facebook page for Legion members and other supporters to post comments of good wishes and appreciation to serving men and women as well.
“Social media gives everyone a chance to show their support,” commented Ms. Varga, “but more importantly, we want our troops to see that their commitment and dedication has not gone unnoticed no matter where they are in the world”, she added.
