I have wanted to be a fire fighter for a living since I was about 8 and a friend of mine suggested joining the air force and becoming a fire fighter in the armed forces. I looked in the career locater on the recruiting website and I was surprised I only needed a grade 10 education to sign up. I only made it to grade 12 before leaving highschool due to having to help support my family (mother brother and sister). I am 22 and I am in decent shape. I am overweight, but I train in Brazilian jiu jitsu/submission grappling 3 times a week for an average of 3 hours a class. I also do a jailhouse workout on my own. So while I am overweight, I am in good shape and I should be able to pass all the tests with some focused training, although I am concerned about the 2.5K run. I will have to push it to get under 12 mins. Big men aren't fast. 8)
I was curious as to what exercises would be good for passing the tests and what ones would help get me ready for basic. I am doing some work on the bike, doing push ups, sit ups, wind sprints, doing more cardio when I train, even doing some mixed martial arts with my submission grappling. What else should I be focused on? What would help me with my grip strength? I should pass it no problem, but I want to make sure. Also how long would it take me to get into the fire fighters? Would it make more sense to join the infantry and move over? I want to join ASAP after I am ready physically. My friend, who is in basic now, waited for several months to get into the engineers before he went to basic. However, a friend of my brothers only waited a few weeks to join up as an infantry soldier.
So, to summarize.
1. What exercises should I be doing to get ready?
2. How long would I have to wait to get into something like the fire fighters?
3. Would I be able to join the infantry and the move over as soon as their was an opening?
4. Do I really only need a 10 ten education to join?
5. Anything else I should know?
Sorry for creating a thread that asks questions that have probably been answers a thousand times, but I had 5 questions and I didn't think there would be a thread that answered all 5. Thanks in advance.
