I have wanted to be a fire fighter for a living since I was about 8 and a friend of mine suggested joining the air force and becoming a fire fighter in the armed forces. I looked in the career locater on the recruiting website and I was surprised I only needed a grade 10 education to sign up. I only made it to grade 12 before leaving highschool due to having to help support my family (mother brother and sister). I am 22 and I am in decent shape. I am overweight, but I train in Brazilian jiu jitsu/submission grappling 3 times a week for an average of 3 hours a class. I also do a jailhouse workout on my own. So while I am overweight, I am in good shape and I should be able to pass all the tests with some focused training, although I am concerned about the 2.5K run. I will have to push it to get under 12 mins. Big men aren't fast.  8)

I was curious as to what exercises would be good for passing the tests and what ones would help get me ready for basic. I am doing some work on the bike, doing push ups, sit ups, wind sprints, doing more cardio when I train, even doing some mixed martial arts with my submission grappling. What else should I be focused on? What would help me with my grip strength? I should pass it no problem, but I want to make sure. Also how long would it take me to get into the fire fighters? Would it make more sense to join the infantry and move over? I want to join ASAP after I am ready physically. My friend, who is in basic now, waited for several months to get into the engineers before he went to basic. However, a friend of my brothers only waited a few weeks to join up as an infantry soldier.

So, to summarize.

1. What exercises should I be doing to get ready?
2. How long would I have to wait to get into something like the fire fighters?
3. Would I be able to join the infantry and the move over as soon as their was an opening?
4. Do I really only need a 10 ten education to join?
5. Anything else I should know?

Sorry for creating a thread that asks questions that have probably been answers a thousand times, but I had 5 questions and I didn't think there would be a thread that answered all 5. Thanks in advance.

Since the recruiting FAQ seem to not be working (maybe I am just doing something wrong) and I am feeling nice here are some links that should help you:

Question 1.

Question 2.
Firefighter is a very limited trade. Not many openings, and lots of people want to get in.

Question 3.
short answer is yes, but then again firefighter is a very limited trade. Not many openings, and lots of people want to get in.

Question 4.
short answer yes, but to be competitive you might want some more education.

Question 5.
Sorry I can't answer that one. Anyone else???

Just a hint-Always make sure you search before you post, it is a good habit to get into.   :D

Regarding your third question, transferring from the infantry to another trade, If you search the forums, you will find many horror stories about changing trades.  Firstly, the CF will invest a lot of time and money to train you as an infantry soldier.  They would be less than pleased to see you jump ship and become a firefighter at the first possible moment.  Your best bet would be to go down to the CFRC in your area and speak with a recruiter, your tax dollars pay for him/her to be there, there is no reason not to.  Good luck.
