Read this morning he arrived in the US in 2021 during the pullout from Af. He applied for official asylum status in December 2024….the Asylum vetting process was completed and his status was approved in April 2025.Per NBC News:
- Suspect identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29
- Served in the Afghan National Army for ten years up until 2021, including alongside U.S. soldiers. (Not sure this matches up unless he joined age 15?)
- Came to the U.S. in 2021. Presumably part of the bailout of Afghans who worked alongside Americans.
- Has a wife and several kids.

I read, but have not yet confirmed, that the administration has recently decided to reopen and reexamine a lot of Afghan asylum and/or refugee claims including for those already approved. Maybe a hint to some sort of motive? Or could be he’s just fucked up.
There are some accounts floating around of how it all went down. Nothing I trust enough to repeat. A couple of bystanders national guardsmen might be heroes though.

A National Guard major armed with nothing but a pocket knife stopped gunman Rahmanullah Lakanwal who opened fire on two Guard persons just blocks from the White House on Wednesday (November 26), according to reports.
Investigators say Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan man from Bellingham, Washington, allegedly drove nearly 3,000 miles across the country before launching the attack near the Farragut West Metro entrance around 2 p.m. at 17th and I Streets NW.
Lakanwal reportedly pulled out a .357 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver and fired at two National Guard troops on patrol.
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of the West Virginia National Guard, was struck in the head and chest.
