I would like your help.
I did my ap test last week and going for my med, fitness and interview on aug.10th.
I picked 3 options for enrollment :

Infantry- because it looks like something I would enjoy- looks like a blast of a time.

bos'n- because you get to travel around the world and I like the sea

Firefighter- something I always wanted to do, love jet fighters and good career options.

what are my career options for Infantry after service?
just don't want to be going back to warehousing or a crap job (if I don't continue on to collect my cpp)

all the best to all the rookies!

As it states on the DND website Http://www.Dnd.ca

There isn't any directly related civvy job that goes with infantry.

BUT..

MANY employers see past military experience as an incredible and indisposable commodity among applicants. It shows you have dedication, are a HARD worker, can take orders and get a job done!

Not to mention the certifications you can get while in the Infantry like: First Aid+CPR Level C for one, Military Vehicle Liscences, etc....

There are also country/world wide organizations dedicated to finding ex-military people jobs.

For an example, look up the Legionnaires of Canada, a security guard company. Very reputable.

Hope that helps,
Joe

After the infantry, your career choices are limited only by your education and your commitment to building a second career. Military service offers the opportunity to gain and develop many skills (personal and professional) beyond the common descriptions issued by the Recruiting Centre or fostered by Hollywood.

I started firefighting after joining the Reserves and I would not have gotten the job I am in now without Military Experience, that's what they liked at the time. Eight guys were hired in my class and all eight were combat arms: 2 Engineers, 1 Artillery and 5 Infantry

I have just joined the reserves in an infantry regiment and i am also going to school for fire fighting..personally i would be a full time fire fighter before an infantry soldier..it is fun...but do you wanna do it full time? if you get in to fire fighting do it because so many guys are trying for it ull be lucky to be a fire fighter in a civi department before you are 30..so the fire dept i did my co-op with tells me.

I'm also going into the reserves to give me experience when I apply to the police force. ALOT of ex-military and current military people become civvy cops. I'm going to eventually apply for MP in the military and civvy force at the same time and whichever one takes me first I'll do!

My girlfriend of 3 years is against living on a base so I'm not sure how things will turn out if I don't get the civvy police job. We'll see! :P

Just to add to what others have said, I don;t think potential employers look at the trade you were, only that you were military. When I got hired in my new profession I was the only one of eight who didn't have a secondary education, in fact all I had was a GED for grade 12 that I wrote just before getting out.
Bruce

Further to what Bruce said, I spoke with the HR department of my employer and asked specifically why they hired ex military in that go around, they said that at that time they needed people who could operate on their own quite quickly and they felt that those with Military service would do good. She also said that they could expect certain levels of discipline, self motivation, teamwork, work ethics and physical fitness right off the hop. It didn't work out for two of the guys but the rest of us have prospered and some have moved further on to even better things.

Burkalator: Interesting note for you, 3/4 of the personnel in the operations division of the Boston Fire Dept are ex Marines. That says something pretty loud and clear to me!

Cheers

you mean the Corps of Commissionaires
its a good company
i work for them now and theirs lots of retired army people in it

Here's an idea...have you ever thought of joining the infantry to learn skills that you'll use later in life as a Sgt or WO?

Ever think about it as a life choice instead of a stepping stone?  Good pay, free clothes, food, and guns.

Stay a while, it's a good life.

I've been sitting on pins and needles for 18 long months waiting for someone to add to this thread.

But, .. hey, it's New Years.

Happy New Years Sean.
