British Military Current Events

How can he be the senior enlisted advisor to the CSC if he's a commissioned officer?
I suspect he previously held that position, and was commissioned after completing his posting.

He was commissioned as a captain in 2014 (with seniority to Dec 2013) and promoted to major in 2019.

Intermediate Regular Commissions (Late Entry)

Warrant Officer Class I Glenn John Haughton Grenadier Guards 24830292 to be Captain 9 December 2013

The undermentioned Captains to be Majors 31 July 2019 with seniority 31 July 2019 . . .

G. J. HAUGHTON OBE Grenadier Guards 24830292

While he filled the positions of Army Sgt Major and then later SEAC, even though he wore WO1 insignia, used that rank title and probably remained a member of the WO and Sgts mess, he was actually already commissioned.

The same goes for the current Army Sgt Major

Paton served as a warrant officer with 3rd Battalion, The Rifles.[2] He was commissioned as a captain on 23 July 2017,[3] and appointed as Field Army Sergeant Major in 2018.[4] He was appointed Army Sergeant Major in November 2018, thereby becoming the most senior member of the other ranks of the British Army.

From last year and may already have been posted. But seemed to marry up with this thread and Force 2025 thread

The 'special' thing can be overdone, of course.

Good infantry comes from good leadership, just like most organizations, and that's pretty special in its own right.

Bizarre.... how can you be commissioned as Captain then, a year later, still be serving as a Sgt Major?
Doesn't the British Army have some bizarre reg that other ranks/NCO's can't serve beyond 22 years unless they take a commission? Maybe that's the case - forced CFR but revert to RSM for the appointment so they can stay on strength due to TI?

I have no idea, of course, but that sounds so effed up you're probably right! :)

A British Soldier Smashed Through a Roof in California in a Botched Training Jump

A British paratrooper training with U.S. troops crashed through the roof of a home in California during a July 6 High Altitude Low Opening, or HALO, jump after his parachute failed to fully deploy.

"The soldier received minor injuries and is recovering well," a spokesperson with the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., told Military.com Monday. "The U.K. military always tries to minimise the disruption caused by exercises and continues to be extremely grateful for the support from the local community for critical exercises such as this."

Lucky it wasn't in Texas or even maybe Arizona - someone likely would have lit him up

Be good, or we'll be back....

The witch hunt of Paras is at an end: Amnesty for Troubles veterans that will stop prosecutions for anything that happened before Good Friday Agreement... but IRA also covered in deal

  • Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis will announce the plan tomorrow
  • He is set to grant an amnesty for crimes committed during the Troubles
  • British soldiers and paramilitaries will benefit from tomorrow's announcement
  • The government has faced criticism from ex-soldiers facing historic allegations
Veterans who served in Northern Ireland are finally set to be freed from the threat of prosecution.

In a victory for the Daily Mail, a planned statute of limitations will today be announced covering all incidents during the Troubles.
The move by Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis is expected to bring justice for up to 200 British soldiers who served during 30 years of bloody conflict in the Province.

But, in a bitter blow, it will also give an effective amnesty to IRA terrorists who murdered and maimed thousands during the period.

The IRA already got their "Get Out Of Jail Free" Cards from Tony Blair.

IIRC there was no amnesty for crimes that had not been prosecuted yet at that time (2005 I think), as part of the Good Friday accords.

This most recent initiative takes all the other IRA (as well as those committed by other extremist groups') crimes, such as those not yet making it to the prosecution stage, off the books as well in return for not prosecuting any soldiers.

Make no mistake about it, without the amnesty the war would have continued and the dead would have continued to accumulate.

It was a very unpopular move but was key in helping to create the peace that Norn Iron has enjoyed since then.

Because those civvies always mess up the details of armoured vehicles, right? :)

Classified Challenger tank specs leaked online for videogame

A gamer identifying as Challenger 2 commander has posted a classified document online in order to improve the accuracy of the design of the tank in the game ‘War Thunder’.

War Thunder is a vehicular combat multiplayer video game developed and published by Gaijin Entertainment. Despite the fact that Gaijin Entertainment lists itself as a Cyprus-based studio, it was originally founded in Moscow, Russia, where it still has offices today.
