‘Tactical’ aviationIf I recall they were sent to Mali as escorts for the CH47's so that would make them tactical I guess.

Its like Linus' security blanket: wont do fuck all, but we all feel better for having it with us...‘Tactical’ aviation
4 x Griffins don’t give you a whole lot honestly. That’s not necessarily a knock against the platform just its numbers.
4 birds equals basically 1 persistent line of task of 1-2 birds or 1 episodic line of task of 3-4 birds.
You could plan to use them as a persistent CASEVAC LoT from the UMS rearward or maybe as a cued ISR asset to confirm stuff picked up by other ground based assets although I don’t think they have stand-off sensors, ie MX15s anymore.
3-4 birds on an episodic basis are not really enough for much in the way of air movements either although I would expect to see people pretending that using them to insert recce and snipers 5-15km in front of the FEBA is realistic.
Honestly I think the most realistic use would be as CASEVAC from the UMS, Command and Liaison and emergency resupply (maybe).
I could see use as a cued ISR asset maybe if they have or get something akin to the MX15.
So what you are saying is that they will be attached to the Service Battalion?
One usually would have a Squadron for a Bde Field Amb /CASH, if one had a real plan for casualties…No, I would see them remaining as an independent detachment tasked by the Bde staff. If they were a CASEVAC LoT I suppose you could maybe consider them as Direct Support to the Bde Field Amb?
I don’t appreciate at lot of the lacking areas of the CA, especially when they are forward deployed near a hostile regime. WRT Spike, I do like the NLOS ER version - but that’s more of a Bde Cav type range. The little Spike to me is more akin to the Eryx, as it rarely hits what it is aimed at, and the warhead has some issues.I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume @KevinB doesn’t appreciate the lack of standoff precision strike capability. Especially in the context of this theatre.
They likely dug out the notes from the 2006 trial done in gagetown with the Spike, I highly doubt this was a pure reading the brochure purchaseA serious Army would have addressed that and conducted a real trial, not listening to glossy brochures and media briefs.
They have Mx 15s. It’s a pretty good pod. Probably the best thing about the Griphon right now.4 x Griffins don’t give you a whole lot honestly. That’s not necessarily a knock against the platform just its numbers.

A good vid of RAF Chinook medevac in AFG, pushing up the speed to extract an injured young soldier. This is the MERT model that the RCAF used to develop the CMERT. You can see them leave the Apaches behind a couple of times.Chinooks are fast! Even Apaches can’t keep up.
The trial was in 2001/2 and done with the Brits alongside Javelin. They likely dug out the notes from the 2006 trial done in gagetown with the Spike, I highly doubt this was a pure reading the brochure purchase
Wikipedia says that CANSOFCOM has been using Spike so maybe that eased the decision
In places where it makes sense, like Mali, we (Griffons) were able to take off much earlier on calls than the Chinook to minimize this issue. Ya, our mx is painful, literally. The 147s could do CMERT like they did in Mali. Ironically Chinooks have to slow down to let the Griffons keep up, so it’s funny when the Griffon folks complain about “walking the dog” (escorting the Chinooks) but they can’t keep up and. Have to ask the Chinook what it sees with its MX-15…
Well in true CA tradition, follow CANSOFCOM to the T, and 4-5 years from now they will have gotten and divested the Spike tooFrom what I recollect CANSOF started using Spike shortly after deploying to Iraq to support the Peshmerga due to the threat from armoured dump trucks etc. I seem to also remember them also divesting the system a few years ago and asking if the Army wanted them, course the Army said no.
Why can't the same folks who say "No RCAF, you'll take the C-295 and make it work! I don't care that you'd prefer another aircraft!"From what I recollect CANSOF started using Spike shortly after deploying to Iraq to support the Peshmerga due to the threat from armoured dump trucks etc. I seem to also remember them also divesting the system a few years ago and asking if the Army wanted them, course the Army said no.
