2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

legitimate question to you and anyone else who says they dont trust MSM, who do you trust? and what if anything would have to happen for you to trust MSM again
It would likely take awhile for me to decide, because none of them can change their stripes overnight.
They would have to divest themselves of all government support.
They would have to compete like any other business based on advertisement and other legal, corporate means of finance.
And I don’t know how it would be accomplished, but I'd like to see an end to stories based on "I was told by a high ranking intelligence source" and similar anonymous sources.

I think calling it trust if overly dramatic. I don't like the product they produce. I very rarely watch any news anymore. Newsprint is dead, I don't know when the last time was I read a paper. I do like Vassey Kapelos though, but I wanth portions of her show from the CTV YouTube channel.

I listen to talk radio, watch YouTube and podcasts (Spotify), I used to use Twitter but that place is a disaster. And I conduct my own fact checking where I think it's necessary.

I've been checking out ground news a little bit, I like that they show all sides and let me decide for myself.

Are you anticipating a Ford run for PM?
Um… I won’t go so far as to say anticipating it yet? But I think he’s watching for the opening. I’d definitely say that, as we sit here in April 2025, he’d certainly make the first skim if we were trying to draw up an early shortlist for potential contenders if the CPC lose and determine they need to change leadership. Ford’s marked success at the provincial level would make him someone the party would have to at least consider. I’m gonna be watching for signs he’s learning French, and policy commentary that starts to transcend the provincial level, particularly overtures to the Prairies.

$200B in more debt and there won't be a single pipeline made to uncouple us from the US. We'll increase defense spending in just wage growth instead of capability because soldiers can't afford homes due to the previous massive inflationary deficits. Industrial carbon tax keeps getting bigger, destroying our competitive edge. What a time to be a Liberal supporter, our kids will have an amazing future rolling wheelbarrows of cash to stores to buy a loaf of bread.

THIS is a fantastic question!

...

For myself, my distrust in the mainstream media has been growing for well over a decade.

I don't know exactly when it started or why, but I think they had reported extensively on something & all followed the same general narrative. And when it turned out that news story was actually far different than what had actually happened, there was silence...they just moved on to the next "thing".

What really stood out to me was their coverage of 9-11, and more recently their coverage of Covid 19.

In regards to Covid 19, what specifically stood out to me & caught my attention was how much longer the Canadian MSM had Covid as their primary news story vs what the news was covering in other countries.

I used to check out the SOMNIA website run by the Canadian Forces College as my primary source of geopolitical news from around the world. And it was quite easy to see, near the tail end of Covid, that it was Canadian news sources that were still pumping out Covid fear-mongering for MONTHS after the rest of the world had moved on...

(I find the effort and quality of the SOMNIA website these days has gone considerably downhill...)

That was, until, Russia invaded Ukraine.

Then - I kid you not - any and all coverage about Covid literally stopped overnight, with the Russian invasion now being the primary focus for a while.

All it took was one big event to happen, and all of a sudden the thing they were telling me to fear yesterday (and had been for 2 years basically) magically stopped being newsworthy, and replaced by something else entirely...

That cemented the long, slowly building distrust I had for the MSM

...

Who do I trust?

I try to keep an open mind, and find I consume enough news from enough sources to be able to sniff out when something is utter nonsense and when something may have an element of truth to it...

And I find myself more & more listening to individual podcasts that focus on news.

I still listen, somewhat, to the MSM - but only really to stay aware of what's being talked about.

But some individual podcasts do a great job of shedding some light on the rest of the story, and not just the narrow, cherry-picked things the MSM wants us to believe.

These, and foreign news sources about Canadian political topics, I find far more encompassing than Canadian MSM.

...

(The moment the Liberals announced $600M in media subsidies a few years ago, was probably one of the final nails in the coffin for me. $600M buys a lot of loyalty. Since then, the government has paid out additional media subsidies that have largely gone unreported by the very MSM outlets receiving OUR tax dollars. The relationship between Canadian MSM & Canadian government, via subsidies, is nowhere near the arms-length relationship they should have...)

And the proof is in the pudding with current events, re our election

The 2 main parties have very different takes on what to do about the CBC.

Pierre Poilievre has stated he would like to defund the CBC, and have it stand on its own 2 legs. Mark Carney has stated he would continue to fund the CBC, and even protect that funding using legislation.

So if you were the CBC, who would you get behind? Who would you report on more favorably?

There's a reason why the MSM hasn't reported in detail on Carney's real legacy with the Bank of England (some say a lot of the UK's financial woes now can largely be blamed on Carney's decisions) or his activities in Peru and what a certain mayor has to say about him...

And there's a reason why the MSM hasn't reported on Carney’s extremely close ties to the Trump family (re Brookfield essentially bailing out Jared Kushner more than once)

...

What would it take to regain confidence?

- The ending of any/all government subsidies to Canadian media outlets (they can't convince me they'll report on what the government is doing in an unbiased way if it's the government paying their bonuses and salaries)

- for Canadian MSM outlets to investigate, and report on, the various relevant stories they currently ignore (yet are picked up on & investigated by some independent podcasts)

- for the MSM to demonstrate, consistently, and independent opinion & voice about current events. And to NOT use blatantly obvious psychological manipulation tactics to essentially brainwash the masses

(For anybody who took the CF Psychological Operations course circa 2004-2007 knows exactly what I'm talking about. I'm sure the course outside of those years is equally as relevant, I just don't have any familiarity with the course outside of those years)

And the reason why EVERYBODY should be skeptical of the MSM...

200B in debt with an operating surplus of 225 million going into 2030. You really can't commit to name dropping a proposal because that puts them in the bad position legally if it is approved people will challenge saying the gov was bias. They gotta thread that needle carefully, the one project, one review plan, and reducing reviews to a max 2 years will get projects moving, pipeline or not.

We are well on our way to becoming the Argentina of North America....how people don't see it us utterly mind boggling...

But where would you get your hockey news? 😁

We already have the Auditor General. Maybe that office can be expanded and given more powers of enforcement.
They currently have no powers of enforcement. The office reports to Parliament. Period. Much depends one what people mean by 'enforcement'.

Perhaps something more akin to the US Government Accountability Office; although I say that not knowing much about how it operates.
