2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

They currently have no powers of enforcement. The office reports to Parliament. Period. Much depends one what people mean by 'enforcement'.

Perhaps something more akin to the US Government Accountability Office; although I say that not knowing much about how it operates.
We already have the mechanisms in place to do all of those functions. It just depends on whether the government of the day wants to use them or not.

We are well on our way to becoming the Argentina of North America....how people don't see it us utterly mind boggling...
a little more fiscal discipline is called for IMO but i think a little perspective is in order. We are so far away from Argentina it might as well be that new planet everyones talking about

You mean like the multi million dollar 'gardener's shed' we built for trudeau?
You see? If people complain about that, how much would they howl about Trudeau having gone the full Monty on the place? Or would you have been ok with spending bazillions on the place because Canada’s leader of any party needs a place to live?

This also goes, BTW, to Team Red boosters who might whine about the same amount of $ being spent by a Team Blue government on the same thing ;)

The whole 24 Sussex / Harrington Lake thing is so stupid. We’re a G7 country. We should have official residences that support both state visits, and our head of government being able to work productively and/or briefly relax in modern, safe, and secure properties. We need to grow up and make this not partisan.

Good luck with that. People prefer the race to the bottom.

The CAF is part of the public sector.

If you mean the Public Service, no I don’t.
Public Service yes.

PS is 6 times the size of the CAF. A pay raise for everyone would be pricy.

And if the CAF could somehow get a pay raise without the PS that begs the question will the CAF get left behind on the next PS pay raise.

The PS collective agreement expired the day it was signed. I believe they will enter collective bargaining this year or next.

Simple solution is to just increase and update the mil factor. So when the PS gets its increase it’s already baked in.

I think a messy CPC civil war is close to inevitable if they lose, unless the reform faction basically collapses. I’ll wait for Gurney and Gerson to bring us the tea on that.
Until they can occupy a closer-to-centre position, the CPC is more likely to see even more defeats. The LPC seems to out-maneuver them every time. Once Trudeau resigned and Carney replaced him, the CPC seemed to be unassailable. But they blew their huge lead in a matter of weeks. So was it because of Liberal skulduggery? To my mind people were angry as hell with the Trudeau Liberals and were hoping that the Conservatives would offer a more promising future. Yet at the same time a large portion of Canadians, especially women, did and still do not trust Poilievre. The LPC released their party platform today accompanied by some financial justification. The CPC under Poilievre still hasn’t given us a real breakdown of what they are going to do despite having had more time to prepare for the election than Carney’s team. When are they going to do it? The day of the election?

If O’Toole or Ambrose were leading the Conservatives now, I am sure either one of them would have been more of a threat to the Liberals. But even so, their party is too right of centre to occupy and maintain a comfortable majority. I am not a Doug Ford fan but I suspect that, if he were party leader, he would do more to push the LPC away from their centre position. Once again, the Conservatives are excelling at shooting themselves in the foot.

You gotta appreciate the grandeur of that platform. There isn't much they didn't promise. Multiple arctic deep water ports when we're struggling to finish one started in 2007? That list has everything. Well except maybe F35s? I didn't see mention of that.
They specifically mention though, subs, AEW, and self propelled howitzers.

They mention a lot of things. Why did they leave the fighter jet replacement out of the platform though? It's been a pretty big deal for over a decade. Are we just going to stick with what we have?

Considering they are doing a review, I don't think they want to commit to a course of action before actually doing the required research. Let's not put the cart before the horse.
