Every party in opposition wails about omnibus bills every time the government introduces one . . .then turns around and introduces them once in power. The Liberals are doing that shady shit they always try to do... (and succeed at doing, somehow)
They introduce a bill and call it something respectable, and point out the respectable issue that the bill is intended to rectify...but they leave out all the other stuff the bill includes that have nothing to do with the issue the bill is intended to rectify...
To me, it's incredibly dishonest & seems to mock the electorate. How it isn't illegal is beyond me, it absolutely should be.
Not wanting to add to your paranoia but your police sources are mistaken. The SCOC confirmed 'arbitrary traffic stops' back in 1990. I'm not sure if they call Ottawa with the information though.I know police who bragged that they can find an excuse to pull over anyone; I don't know whether that's actually possible, but it was the attitude that froze me, not the practicality
I didn't really think it was possible. As I wrote, the attitude was the problem; I suppose they assumed because I wore a Res F uniform I would be sympathetic. Much of the rotten conduct in the armed forces we've wrestled with on these pages the past few years was grounded in failures to recognize and/or apprehend unethical conduct among peers before imposed repeated mandatory training became necessary. It's equally obvious police forces have similar problems. I distrust them - or anyone else - to hold extraordinary powers to gather information. Not wanting to add to your paranoia but your police sources are mistaken. Yes- NDP will pick up some of the left from this… But if Carney governs like this for a couple years, he’ll eat a lot of the lunch of whoever’s leading the Conservatives into the next election… And I’m growing a bit more doubtful that that will be Poilievre. I think if Carney stays on this course, the CPC may realize they need a very different kind of leader to take him on. I’m not sure what that looks like.
I think you are right.I have said it since the CPC lost. PP has to go. I simply don't think you can blow that lead and lose your seat and still stick around. I wish he would do the honorable things and step back.
I was of the same opinion when Trudeau was still at the helm. When Trudeau stepped down, but Poilievre kept to the same schtick with Carney; I started having my doubts.I think you are right.
Personally, I really like the idea of Pierre Poilievre both as opposition leader and as Prime Minister.
I think its a bit more immediate than that. Every day that PP is not in the House, he fades further into obscurity politically; and thus diminishes his influence with voters and some would argue his own party. But I feel like the CPC will perhaps need a new leader well before the next election.
I think Trump had some affect on this election outcome due to his idiotic policies, but even less so with his rambling commentary on the candidates.I wonder, if Trump hadn't made the comments he did, who would have been elected...
Question Period is his pulpit. Not having those clips to run is killing him. He’ll be past that problem in the fall, but he’s lost a ton of momentum. We’ll see if Carney keeps his. Very quickly we’ll see Carney’s major platform planks run into serious headwinds. Navigating the provinces and First Nations for major resource projects is not going to be clean or easy.I agree with Darrell Bricker: it was both the Trump threats and Trudeau being replaced by Carney. I’m convinced that if only one of those things happened, we would have PMPP right now.
I was of the opinion that Poilievre should stay; the Tories have a bad habit of binning leaders after one go and he did give them their best showing. But he is now giving off loser energy. I don’t know.![]()
If I were going to play dirty pool I’d set the budget date for when PP will be campaigning for his seat. Set the bi election day right before, on or right after. To keep his momentum gone. Have Scheer be the voice in the house for that.Question Period is his pulpit. Not having those clips to run is killing him. He’ll be past that problem in the fall, but he’s lost a ton of momentum. The question still remains as to how sincere he is on all of that. He has Guilbeault to block off development on Hudson Bay by declaring new parks, he has done nothing to relax the carbon tax constraints on oil development and he has stated that he won't do anything without consensus regarding pipelines. He is also insisting on no ICE cars after 2035. Who in hell will invest in resource development with those kind of handicaps? It is already becoming evident that his vaunted 2% is mostly smoke and mirrors which is nothing more than you should expect when you put a banker in charge of justifying a financial goal. Show me the shovels in the ground and I will start believing.Question Period is his pulpit. Not having those clips to run is killing him. I'm not even sure that the Fall is going to be a success for him.Question Period is his pulpit. Not having those clips to run is killing him. He’ll be past that problem in the fall, but he’s lost a ton of momentum.
I think if the process yields results... most Canadians will brush the Provincial whinging and AFN concerns heartedly. We’ll see if Carney keeps his. I suspect once the writ is dropped the LPC will start talking about the majority won by the candidate in the last election, and setting that as the floor for expectations for PP in the byelection. If I were going to play dirty pool I’d set the budget date for when PP will be campaigning for his seat. Bruce Fanjoy was getting donations from across the country. I wonder if we’d see anything similar in that bi election.I suspect once the writ is dropped the LPC will start talking about the majority won by the candidate in the last election, and setting that as the floor for expectations for PP in the byelection.
Turn it into a referendum on PP with an 80%+ approval rating required, and sow dissent in the CPC.

Some people here tried to get Ruby Dhalla to be the leader of the LPC. I wouldn’t put anything passed anyone if they are motivated enough to try to push the change they want.I'd sooner throw money at PP than any Separatists he will be probably running against.
I hated it when Harper did. I hated it when Justin did it. I won't accept Carney doing it.Every party in opposition wails about omnibus bills every time the government introduces one

I also don't like "poison apple" bills.
If a bill needs to be about X subject then lets keep it about that X subject, focusing on the aims specific to it. For example in a 50 page bill about regulating airplanes and aircraft, we don't need a section dedicated to not insulting polar bears in public.
