Replacing the Subs

Sorry for going off-topic but since South Korea's intentions on building Nuke submarines were mentioned earlier I thought I post this South Korean news article that contradicts President Trumps statement that boats would be built in the US.

If SK wants to build them in SK then Trump consider that a double cross and decide to inflict some economic harm on another Allie.

CTV reported this morning that the RFP for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project has been sent out to Hanwha and TKMS, with a due date of March 2, 2026. No details yet as they have not been published in the normal channels.

The DIA has sent the request for proposals for building and manufacturing the submarines to the two finalists: South Korea company, Hanwha Ocean and German defence company TKMS .

The deadline for RFP submission is March 2, 2026.

A quick timeline. 3.5 months, including Christmas, which, for the Germans, cuts that down to 3 months effectively.

Willing to bet that our decision will be made at/around the new spring fiscal timeline, so 6 weeks later in mid April after Parliament comes back from Easter break. If so, a decision made by mid-April fits into the stated South Korean timeline of signing a contract in 2026 would result in the first sub by 2032 and 4 subs by the end of 2035.

They have just about 50, last time I looked up the numbers. And that's total numbers, not how many are deployed at any given time.

That is a surprise. Given that Canada has 27/28 I would have thought China has a lot more than 50.

Maybe they aren’t into fling wing ASW

They are only just building a blue water navy. Most of their airborne ASW would be land based fixed wing, with a lot of smaller surface and sub surface assets.

Underwater sensor net across the Taiwan straight, and drones. They will probably also mine heavily given the opportunity to keep subs out of those waters.

So a sub that can standoff 1500 km and launch tactical missiles against ground and sea targets might be more useful than one only equipped with torpedoes?

If the US/Allies were to block the Straits of Malacca and other choke points to prevent China from getting vital resources then the PLAN might have to sortie its subs and possibly surface assets to try and break the blockade. Quiet subs with torpedoes may be very useful then. There is no one scenario and no one perfect platform. Horses for Courses as they say.

What boats have missiles with that range?

Any boat with a 21" torpedo tube and the right software.

The Tomahawk is compatible with the 21" tube.

The German boat could probably do it but the Korean boat allows for both torpedoes and missiles.

The Korean Hyunmoo 4-4 SLBM has a maximum range of approximately 500 km so Tomahawks is the winner

Anyone know if is in the CPSP Req list?
