War on Free Speech

It's shows how murky the world is. Social Media does not generally respect national boundaries, countries are generally used to enforcing laws on their turf, but in the internet, where exactly is the "Turf"? Is it the server, or the on the users device? I dislike the UK and EU hate-speech laws, They are to easy to use to bludgeon the population into compliance and very open to abuse by governments, who have a hard time not using a tool to excess when they have unbridled access. I get some of the good intentions, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. If you are going to have hate speech laws, the onus on government to prove their case must be strictly enforced, with penalties to both the department and individuals involved in any excess enforcement.

On the subject of "hate- motivated" enforcement, Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit issued a News Release on Christmas Eve,

Meanwhile in the UK

Non-crime hate incidents (thought crimes) will be scrapped. Police will no longer enforce them.

Our betters may be getting the message. The British aristos have always had a sense for when the guillotine was getting too close.

Multi-culturalism trumps free-speech in the EU, the UK, Australia and.... Canada?

We are living a social experiment.

Any tumbrils handy?
There is no particularly compelling reason for multi-culturalism to be a goal. Just stop trying to mix liberal and illiberal cultures. When we figure the latter are ready, they can join.

In 2023 police in the UK arrested 32 people per day for online posts. Many of those posts were for causing someone distress or anxiety 🙄

Perhaps an annual Jizya on anyone wanting their wives to wear hijabs and similar. Either you take part in our society or we will make it expensive for you.

That's why I floated this out there. Curious to hear the different perspectives on this.

How is it about money??
It is about control and money. Right now the US profits handsomely from social media companies as they own most the top dogs. Anything which undermines that monopoly is unacceptable to the oligarchs as it is low cost high return on said corporations.

Neither side at the moment is serious about freedom of speech which isn't a good thing. The right wants the left censored. Vice versa for the left.

I get very concerned when the government steps in on freedom of speech as it is never used as intended. For example we have the right to freedom of thought, opinion, and expression. That means yes you can be a fascist, communist, monarchist, pro-democracy, pro-authoritarianism, pro-religious theocracy, etc. It is your right. You also have the right to express it.

The only time that should be illegal is if your directly calling for the death of someone else.

What should be promoted in society is tolerance, not acceptance. Tolerance simply means you have to tolerate people you don't like, not that you need to agree with them or think they should exist in the first place.

You mean the Yugoslavian method? Try to keep the lid on the pressure cooker without allowing any pressure to vent out?

Not my plan. I merely reported on someone else's proclaimed plan.

It is not one with which I can agree.
I am with you. I support open and vigorous debate as an alternative to violence. Relieve the pressure that way.

Those who believe words are violence might also believe that violence is debate.

Words aren't violence, the people who believe that can be shown that it isn't pretty quickly. People with that mindset also tend to have never been punched in the face at one point in their life so their perspective tends to be lacking experience on the subject matter.

Most of Canada's issues could be resolved by dropping the population into Sudan for a few months and then they might actually appreciate what we have here.

I do not fall into that group that supports multiculturalism. It helps create ghettos and enclaves of different groups. They don’t
participate in Canadian culture. They insist and persist in overwhelming local politics, trying to change things that only benefit their particular disporia. They have no pride in Canada and treat us like the world's biggest B&B. Join in and assimilate or go back where they do things to your liking. Don't come here and try make it like there. If you don’t like there, change it. Don’t bring you problems here. Religion, government and race problems you have, leave them at the door when you come here. This is not where you come to squabble about what your problems with other groups are. Go home and have all the Indians fight with Pakistan, or all the muslims fighting with christians. Stay home with that shit. We need immigration to check citizen status for all visa holders. If you're marching in our streets over palestine and you are on a visa, you should be on the next plane back to your own shithole.
