YTZ, this is not directed at you, because I know that you know:

Buying the Gripens requires the US to approve the sale, because the it contains US tech.

How does that free us from the grip of the US?

I do not know how to make this any clearer to the Gripen fanboys.
@ytz pretty much nailed it. The whole sovereignty thing is a bit of a distraction that people have lobbed into the mix. If we wanted sovereignty, we'd have to go ask Dassault for Rafales.

Rafale the only reasonable option that is not controlled by the US, but that has categorically proved interoperable up to and including integrated operations from a USN nuclear carrier.
 
It could be, but that would require either the French Government paying for to integrate American weapons ,sidewinder and ANRAMM ( SP?) the sparrow replacement. And the various air to ground weapons .
The manufacturer has made abundantly clear they're not going to pay for it.

There are different levels of interoperability.
