So whatever happened to the Department of Peace and Disarmament? lol
The defence innovation and production industry should have always been a key tool for the economy.
When defence crosses 3.5%, hopefully the innovation and production share will crest over 3%, and defence/securitywill be one of about 10 pillars of the economy.
We can spend that kind of money and still have a small but far more effective military, and that’s exactly what will happen. Ideally the personnel related costs of the military and federal public service component will trend down in real numbers as capability and automation increase.
If total defence spending approaches 5% other parts of the economy will wither.
So let’s be realistic, pragmatic and prudent.
The spending spree can and will end within 5-7 years. Make the correct decisions now.
